Hmmm....
People saying, "oh, right, so you're a bit of a mongrel then, lol" when I tell them I'm half Chinese-Malay and half Irish.

NO. I'M NOT. I'M MIXED RACE. THAT IS THE CORRECT TERM, PLEASE USE IT.

Aaargh.

A serious question
Does Chinese-Malay mean you are a quarter chinese, a quarter malay, or is Chinese-Malay a separate, what's the correct phrase, cultural group?

well we're all mixed race though arent we
*glides off smugly*

Mixed race
My family background is a mixture of Irish and German with a sprinkling of French and a slightly more than incidental rumour of a Japanese schoolteacher somewhere.

I love filling in those ethnic origin questionnaires.

My mate's black/white
He happily introduces himself as half-caste.

I don't
mind half-caste.

But "mongrel" implies I'm somehow of a lower standing than everyone else.

Mom once told me I was a Heinz.
Fifty-seven varieties.

I rarely give my ethnic background much thought- German, Irish, English, Welsh, Native American, and god knows what else. As it really has no impact on anything, I just say I'm white.
