This is a question Money-saving tips

I'm broke, you're broke, we're all broke. Even the smug guy on the balcony with the croissant hasn't got two AmEx gold cards to rub together these days. Tell everybody your schemes to save cash.

Finally got round to getting a laptop
Trouble is everything I saw in the shops was way better than what I needed. The desktop at home has all my photos and music, which I don't need to carry around with me, all I need to do on the move is check email and basic office stuff.

Blagged an old laptop from a relative who was going to chuck it out anyway. Pentium 4, 1Gb RAM, 40 GB HDD, plenty for what I needed. Installed Ubuntu on it and I was away.

Saved around 200 quid and I get to feel smug. Go me!

old laptops make excellent servers as well,
low power and built-in UPS.

Just been handed
an old laptop to 'fix' - can someone hand me the turd polish please - a 550MHz Celeron where the keyboard doesn't work...

/edit with a 6Gb HD with bad sectors, lol!

this does arise for a certain amount of smugness
when you ahve one in the office of a manufacturing facility and one of the phases of mains power dies because of bollocked up on-site electrical maintenance- 1/3 of people in the open plan office find their PC goes 'DINK!' then black screen, taking with it several hours worth of unsaved work and I'm just fine and dandy on my lappy.

Good point
Although old laptop batteries tend to have off-grid lifespans in minutes rather than hours, so you have to sort things out promptly if the power goes off.

Which is why I happily take the trouble to freecycle post our old CPUs and such
Though I plan to avoid a local charity stockpiling hundreds of old computers. These things don't get better with age!

I took all the usable laptops and monitors and set them up for desktop use by interns. They can surf and do basic office stuff and I don't care how long it takes them on these slow old machines. That they can't get streaming video is a plus ;-)
