To be fair, though...I used to go out with an Archaeologist, and I was finally persuaded to go on a real dig, for one afternoon, removing the top 5mm of sandy soil from a medaeval grave with a very small trowel. The "real thing" would be the most tedious, tedious television you can imagine.
Bonekickers is tosh, but it's fizzy tosh and it's still quite fun.
