This is a question My most treasured possession

What's your most treasured possession? What would you rescue from a fire (be it for sentimental or purely financial reasons)?

My Great-Uncle left me his visitors book which along with boring people like the Queen and Harold Wilson has Spike Milligan's signature in it. It's all loopy.

Either that or my Grandfather's swords.

Not that you can tell from my posts but...
I am a writer!

Well, I'm working on it...
...when I'm not engaging in heavy drinking and running riot because I cannot sleep.
See? I told you I was a writer! F. Scott and Ella Fitzgerald have nothing on me!

It goes without saying, then, that I would take everything I've ever written, which is conveniently locked in a large steamer trunk in my bedroom. It contains piles of short stories, notebooks, dream journals, diaries, love letters and assorted junk, like the pink slip I got in high school when I was suspended for refusing to dump out the cup of coffee that I was drinking. Of course, I would have to grab my laptop as well, because it contains about one-fifth of a novel I am working on and those six chapters do not exist anywhere else in the world.

Eek. Is it just me, or is this post paranoia-inducing? I'm going to go home and back up my hard drive...

I'm only half way through your post, but
F Scott Fitzgerald's wife was called Zelda.

Sorry for the pedant.

backups. Hmmm.
I tried my hand at writing a short while ago, and stored my files on two computers.

Then I was juggling hard drives around and wiped the writing off both computers because I had it on the other one.... Haven't written anything since. Six months of a couple of hours each day. Arsemingeflapsbucketyshite.

So yes, do back up!!!

@ Misskitty
I think that may be a joke...Ella Fitzgerald was a very, very famous jazz singer.

@mistafeesh
Did you just delete the files from your hard-drive or did you format the hard-drive? If you just deleted the files and have not overwritten them, you can still recover the files with specialised file-recovery software. There's freely-available software to download (do not save it to the hard-drive (or hard-drive-partition) that contained your writing) that can 'un-delete' some files, but most of these programs either charge you a ransom or limit you to the number of files that can be recovered or their size. In fact, if you deleted the partition but have not overwritten it, it's still possible to either un-delete the partition or use a hex-editor that can read raw sectors.

If you're not geeky enough to get what I'm saying, read "There are possibilities for recovery but don’t get your hopes up".

.
Why don't you post a short story?
