What would you call your autobiography
Assuming it ever got written.

Alt; First CD you bought.

Morning.

Alt: Cannot remember, possibly the Levellers.

Did you receive my email yesterday?

Work has been mental.
I'll check shortly.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 8:16, Reply)
Who wants to read my crappy life story? No one, I guarantee it.
Therefore I don't have to worry.

Also, this question's been asked before. I got the B*Witched cd. It was SO boppy!

Where It All Went Wrong.
Alt: Do you mean first album or first CD?
The first album I ever bought was Beatles For Sale on cassette ('member cassettes?), the first record I ever bought was Revolver. I was quite a late adopter of CDs so the first one I bought was probably In It For The Money.

Also, good morning.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 8:16, Reply)

*sighs*
I can't be bothered with arguing the relative merits of the Beatles, especially with a renowned musicologist such as you.
I can understand that you don't like them, but this does not necessarily make them shit.

I love Joy Division.
I like early New Order.

I don't mind some Joy Division
But a band consisting of the talentless ones, formed after the only one with a bit of talent topped himself? No thanks.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 8:34, Reply)
That's a bit harsh.
Peter Hook is a grade A twat, but he's hardly talentless.

All his basslines seem to follow the vocal line
it is not only shit, but also dull.
I present to you as clear evidence: Monaco.
And while we're talking about who is a twat in New Order, Barney Sumner gets right on my tits.

He's an atrocious "singer" live as well.

Everyone knows them anyway, and secretly sing along to them, albeit thinking it's somehow leftfield to deride the Beatles as 'shit'

Yet Britpop still managed to plumb far lower depths than Cast.

Apart from every single thing Oasis did, but that sort of goes without saying. Common People has to be a particular low point.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:17, Reply)
It goes without saying that everything that Oasis did was terrible.
There were several long-forgotten bands who jumped on the Britpop bandwagon to try to claim their 15 minutes who were atrocious.
There were however, a few bands lumped in with Britpop that were quite good though.
I think the worst genre to be tagged in though would have to be Post-Britpop.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:25, Reply)
We do not speak of Suede
I'm not familiar with this "post-Britpop", although it sounds like a worst case scenario devised by military bigwigs planning the future of the species after a nuclear explosion designed to stop any further godawful music being made

That really does undermine any chance you had of getting me to see your point of view old boy
Surely Pulp predated Britpop and just piggybacked it for greater record sales anyway?
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:36, Reply)
Yeah, they did. But His & Hers was effectively launched and received as a debut album.
it was virtually impossible to find out anything about their back catalogue at the time.

And Suede are great, if you can pretend it's someone other than Brett Anderson fronting them.

Who are these 'Kaiser chief' of whom you speak ?
Are they one of the popular new 'beat combos' that all the young people are 'grooving' to nowadays perchance?
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:29, Reply)
Not really, not any more
They had a few "hits" some years ago and have dropped off the radar, more or less exactly since they released the depressingly accurate self-reflection "Everything is Average Nowadays".

However they were wheeled out to perform a Who track at the Olympic closing ceremony, despite the fact that the Who were there and closed the night. Bizarre.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:38, Reply)
Ah! I was baffled by the reference to them
Didn't watch the closing ceremony for 2 reasons:-
1/ I don't own a TV
2/ See 1/ above

Further baffled because they weren't born when 'Tommy' was released, thanks for clearing it up.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:44, Reply)
Bit of a slap in the face for them really
But then there were a lot of funny song choices made. If someone had tapped Annie Lennox on the shoulder and said "You're doing Sweet Dreams you mad bint" it would have saved a lot of head-scratching in the audience
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:49, Reply)
I think the closing cermony was spoiled by indulging the music stars.
They should have all been asked to do the songs they are famous for, not something from the new album they are pushing.

Probably an Oasis album.
There's a lot of hate for Oasis, I've noticed. Far more than they deserve. Mostly, I think, because the Gallaghers are cunts. I like how people keep going on about how they copied the Beatles. I'd be interested to see which particular songs they're talking about.

Although let's not underestimate just how big a pair of cunts they were
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:46, Reply)
Plenty of bands have done that.
I don't hate them for it.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:46, Reply)
Oasis also get extra stick for the following reasons;
1. They were all over every radio in the country for two or three years which just makes them all the more hateable
2. Liam Gallagher's voice is incredibly annoying
3. They were genuinely much worse at music than anyone else ever, including Steps
4. Both of them are fucking cunts
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:53, Reply)
Neither
both copied the chord progression from Pachlebel's "Canon" , but then so have hundreds of other artists, hardly plagiarism.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:46, Reply)
They never copied the Beatles as far as I am aware
But they were always dreadful and propped up by a bizarre situation in the music press at the time where editors were afraid to call something wrongly. Cocaine was involved.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:52, Reply)
I've often wondered what would happen if someone at the NME or Radio 1
just stuck their head above the parapet and said "Hang on... this is SHITE!" about whatever hot new band they were currently bigging up for fear of looking uncool if they didn't. Badly Drawn Boy's entire career was substantiated by this fear.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 9:55, Reply)
The NME has often been a great offender for this sort of thing
But the Melody Maker, unsurprisingly not long before its demise, had an editor who refused to allow negative reviews of bands like Oasis.
I've even seen an honest review of Oasis' dire third album by the excellent Taylor Parks, having five stars put at the top by sub-editor, despite it being anything but a five star review.

First 2 vinyl singles, Teenage Rampage by The Sweet, and Devil gate Drive, Suzi Quatro. First actual cd I got was a free classical music one, from a magazine.

Oh, and morning.

"random acts of wrongness" would be my autobiography
the first cd i bought was the "dirty dancing" soundtrack - i was about 11. dad brought our first cd player home from work and told me to get in the car quickly to go and buy a cd. we got to "our price" at 5.58pm and it shut at 6pm, so i just grabbed the first thing i saw.

mind you, i still fucking love a bit of "dirty dancing", me.

AfD is a classic of its genre. I'm not saying that as if it's necessarily a good thing, of course.
(, Tue 14 Aug 2012, 10:34, Reply)
As is Bad, although the genre is rather wider and was arguably beyond redemption by that point
AfD is a masterpiece of an album regardless of the way its genre went downhill rapidly thereafter.
