Although he might have come in during Jon Pertwee as Doctor I'm old enough to remember both. Googled it and it was The Invisible Enemy (1977) Tom Baker

funny thing is alan partdridge said he'd bought the rights to k9 - this was sad at time, but just before dr who became popular again - he'd have made a mint if it was refeatured.
