I've played around with some active image thingies. I found that they were getting leeched from all over the place - loads of people were using them on message boards all over the place. That was putting quite an extra load on my server, so I've crippled them so they only work from b3ta. Another alternative (better in some ways) would be to tag them like Kerry's.

they do seem a bit slow. I sped my perl one up by making it write an image to disk, then serve that for all subsequent requests - on the fly image manipulation seems to be a bit server heavy.
