if it was a straight guy they beat up, well then it's callous and should be punished accordingly, but when it is specifically against a group (black, asian, muslim, gay, tesco workers) well then it really does take on a whole new level of hatred, no?

Don't get me wrong, I think a person deserves life for killing anyone. That said, if it's a rape victim killing her attacker.. or a wife killing the husband who has beaten her for years, well this all needs to be taken into account. As I believe they did with this particular crime. It was hatred on an animalistic level. There is no excuse, nor reason that could possibly explain away what they did.

Yes, they probably had a bastard father (if at all) and a mother who smokes crack... but then we all come from different places...
