# Hmm,
Impeller rather than propeller I think. Therefore = not fan.
(, Fri 6 Oct 2006, 11:29, archived)
# Sorry...
propeller, not impeller.

But even if it was an impeller, then it's still a fan.

# Surely it's being driven by an outside force
then it;s an impeller. A propeller is being used to move the media it's in.

Are air conditioning companies still cynically trying to shift their stocks of CFCs before the ban on R22 etc comes into force?
(, Fri 6 Oct 2006, 11:35, archived)
# I've got a different definition to you then - still, never mind.
But about the CFCs, I wouldn't know, I'm well out of that game.

I work for the NHS now. Unbelievably it's better!

...but yes, they probably are.

# wind turbines only work in a certain windspeed
other then that if the wind is too slow or too fast that they are powered to keep turning, as they are so heavy.

they also take thousands of tonnes of concrete to make the bases to stop them falling over, and the power and energy used in making them and installing them is more then the amount of power they generate, it just tubby mr prescott pushing bills through the get them erected across the country.

also, government advisors on renewable energy have vested interests in these companys as they are also on the board of directors.

wind turbines are not an effective renewable energy source.

# OOOOoooo!
An environmentalist in our midst?

I prefer the classic anecdote about catalytic converters. The platinum for them is mined in appalling conditions in Russia, where air, land and water is polluted during abstraction. Therefore, by the time the cat has finished it's useful life, there has been no net gain to the environment.

I'm bored by environmental issues, I should get a new job.

# there is a checkered history of 'environmental' sticking plasters
we could go on for hours on it.

# I'm an environmental consultant
but I sold my soul years ago and now work for the polluters.

At least I try to stop them polluting as much, and find ways to clean it all up. I can still sleep at night.

A troubling tale was when I went to South Africa: three days before I got there, there was a gas pipeline explosion at the refinery. By the time I was there, production was back up to speed, the area had been cleaned up and the company had paid a fine to the government for killing 16 black workers. That was when I started to question the sort of industry I'm working in!

# i think it is a similar arguement about solar panels too
they cannot generate the amount of energy used to manufacture them
(, Fri 6 Oct 2006, 12:00, archived)
# And they contain toxic heavy metals
but they look nice!

I think we should all have nuclear reactors in our basements, then when I come home drunk and blow it up, the chain reaction means we won't need to worry about energy generation again...or anything else for that matter!
