there are a few developed for mobile tech which may be useful like Opera Mini

Have you tried a text only browser such as lynx?
Or would they sack you for installing it?

edit :

on Firefox, go to Tools/Options/Content and uncheck "Load images automatically"

on IE7 (don't know about previous versions), go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and under the Multimedia section, uncheck "Show Images"

tft monitors can't be read easily at an angle, so I always insist (during workstation assessments)
that the most comfortable position for me is "to one side, at an angle..."
