# Used to be D2, now called LaCie.
Superb quality drives. I wouldn't touch Freecom, if I were you.

Edit: This is my primary backup drive, it's daisy-chained with 2 x 500GB same footprint drives. It feckin' rocks!

# Prodge says his has been solid and running for a good long time.
I can't seem to find much LaCie stuff on the ol'e Amazon, which is my preferred electronic supplier on the basis that I trust their packaging/shipping.

This is really much more of a difficult choice than it should be.

# All the drives in that sequence/build format get my vote.
and they use Maxtor or Hitachi innards.

# I had a Freecom ext. drive
I took it in my boot to N. Wales and it never worked again. I can only assume it didn't like the cold, but it wasn't exactly antarctic in there, and only for a few hours

# try to figure out who actually built the enclosed HDD
Samsung drives served me well for years, Seagate and Maxtor are also quite good

# I've heard very bad things about Maxtor. So I'm wary.
And I've not a clue where I'd start looking to find the drive manufacturer.
