Used to be D2, now called LaCie.
Superb quality drives. I wouldn't touch Freecom, if I were you.
Edit: This is my primary backup drive, it's daisy-chained with 2 x 500GB same footprint drives. It feckin' rocks!

Prodge says his has been solid and running for a good long time.
I can't seem to find much LaCie stuff on the ol'e Amazon, which is my preferred electronic supplier on the basis that I trust their packaging/shipping.
This is really much more of a difficult choice than it should be.

All the drives in that sequence/build format get my vote.
and they use Maxtor or Hitachi innards.

I had a Freecom ext. drive
I took it in my boot to N. Wales and it never worked again. I can only assume it didn't like the cold, but it wasn't exactly antarctic in there, and only for a few hours

try to figure out who actually built the enclosed HDD
Samsung drives served me well for years, Seagate and Maxtor are also quite good

I've heard very bad things about Maxtor. So I'm wary.
And I've not a clue where I'd start looking to find the drive manufacturer.
