they did
in the original series, they manage to get to warp 14.1 at one point.. but then from Next Gen onwards, they changed the maths behind calculating the actual speed, which means that the old warp 5 is much slower than the new warp 5..

The general idea of Voyager got old quickly

Oh look, the ship was help together to gaffer tape but now we've met some friendly people we're 100% ok and back to normal.
