once my brother mistakenly bought me 'trade empires' instead of 'age of empires' what an awful mistake that turned out to be.

age of empires is fucking excellent
I might fire up AoE3 again seeing as I sucked really bad recently when I tried Assassin's Creed.

not as good as
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
or Mech Commander Gold.
They are both similar style games, and the kick AoE's ass.

I always preferred age of empires to the command and conquer games myself.

I was never a huge fan of C&C because it was a direct rip off
of Dune 2 on the Amiga which was one of the best games of the decade. i've been playing Kane's Wrath a bit which is fun.
I've also been enjoying Universe at War, Earth Assault which is really good.
I loved Mech Commander but not as much as the second one but I consider that a different type of game.
I also love Empire Earth and have all releases.

Dune 2 was rather fantastic.
I think I got it together with cannon fodder 2.

cossacks was not that good IMO
and I played much more Total war.
I don't disagree that 2d strategy was ace and I still fondly remember Dune2, the game that spawned them all. I just don't play old games that I have worn keyboards out on. I've not finished all campaigns in AoE3 so I might give it another go.

I hear there's a new total war out in a while,
which will no doubt steal days of my life.

I do.
I have Shogun TW
Medieval TW with viking invasion
Rome TW with barbarian invasion
and MTW 2 above.
I just don't have room on the desktop for stuff I don't play any more. But they are installed on the network somewhere.

oh yeah total war series is the only 3D statagy i really enjoyed
i enjoyed cossacks mainly because the enemies were legendarily thick - I'm shooting hoards of cannon at their cavalry who in an astonishing piece of retaliation elect to stand in a square: straight out of sun tzu's book of war that.
