When I used to work at o2 in leeds, I made one from an a1 piece of paper and launched it from the top floor over the open reception area.
It got stuck in a tree and security had to get it down.

I had a book of papaer planes when i was younger
You could make some truly epic designs. My fave smiple one looks like the one in the left of that photo. It was called 'the super-looper' and used to do massive loops when thrown outside...the harder you throw, the larger the loop :)
