# excellent hard work as it is
but what is the point?

Printing off and cutting out things we've seen on the computer is a fanatastic two fingers up at the protect the rainforest brigade, but other than that, why? If the juxtaposition of the cut out shark in say your own pond is hilarious, why not just do it in photoshop for even more realism and less printing, cutting and photographing.

If this was photoshop stuff without photoshop, then maybe it would be a bit more varied. /pointless talking about stuff as usual blog

# paper use, despite propaganda to the contrary, has no effect on rainforests.
legitimate paper companies do not run around stealing trees from the poor animals, wood manufacture is big business and in order to make it sustainable, they grow their own trees or encourage farmers to grow them for paper and other wood use. want more trees? use more paper.

however, I don't have a printer, so I mostly agree.

# damn! you've rendered this challenge pointless!
:D

# is there not a lot of pollution involved in the logistics of it all - the logging, transport, pulping, processing etc.?
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:29, archived)
# yes
is there a production system which uses raw materials to create a product that just appears without some sort of potential pollution along the way? poor regulation of recycling also means that the recycling of paper produces many harmful chemicals which are pumped into rivers or the ocean in some cases. are there any poorly informed hippies condemning recycling? perhaps.

# Well if you go down that route
You end up with nihilism.

As for the rainforest brigade - don't you have a book out?

# Hahahaha - I was advising this over the summer about swine flu
"The best way to deal with this is to ... run around in tight circles waving your hands in the air and screaming at the top of your voice."
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:50, archived)
# haha indeed.
I've been telling anyone who will listen to me similar things. Most of the people at my work seem to be under the impression that swine flu is some sort of bubonicAIDSsyphillisCERTAINDEATH hybrid, while if one reads any swine flu advice from medics, then they clearly state that the only thing that makes it different from normal flu is its novelty...

But, we are all going to die, somehow. Probably tomorrow. At the hands of swine flu terrorist paedo bird flu schizophrenic weed smokers.

# I don't think I would just want all compos to be about Photoshop though
and half the fun is bending or breaking the rules with something more original than the compo itself - even though the mods get uppity about that and therefore deserving people don't get the recognition for their efforts because it's off at a tangent to the rules, but who gives a shit about the rules anyway, unless it's some shitty troll posting shockporn to get our backs up. I welcome the use of manual skills printing, painting, photography, 3D, Stop-Motion animation etc. what I don't want to see is 10-second Photoshops of Gordon Brown with a dotted line around his dodgy eye *fires up Photoshop*

;)

# I can see where this challenge can work, but I don't have the resources to do it
i.e.
1. print a picture of Brian Blessed's shouting head, track him down, take a photo of him, then take another photo of him with you holding the cutout in front of his face.

2. Print a lifesize garry glitter cutout and place it in a school playground

3. sorry, got to get on with work now
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:55, archived)
# 1, 2 and 3 can all be done with Photoshop skills ;)
especially 3.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:09, archived)
# of course they can
but the people around Blessed and the children's reactions to the cut outs would be harder to fake if you were to do it in Photoshop, it would also be pointless (in photoshop) as its the doing thats the funny thing.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:12, archived)
# I think that was my point
Being able to track down Brian Blessed would be the fun part *stalks*

# Ah, see I DO want all challenges to be shop-based
mY reasonign ebing that most people come here during work time, where it's easier to serruptitously shop something, than it is to create a Heath Robinson contraption on your desk and take a photo of it
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:55, archived)
# I have seen such Heath Robinson desktop contraptions here on b3ta and welcome
the waste of office resources and time :D

But I think all compos should be all media - so if you want to use Photoshop then great, but if you want to get dirty with the manual stuff then also good!
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:57, archived)
# Oh, yeah I don't mind that
it's when they go "No photoshop this week, or we'll have your kneecaps"
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:21, archived)
# Rules are always meant to be broken
but I agree - being able to fake something in Photoshop can be a lot of fun too.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:25, archived)
# I'm not sure if you are having a go at me or the competition in general
If it is at the competition in general I'm not going to stick up for it but I am also not going to get involved in compo bashing.

If you are having a go at me I just thought this particular meme might appeal to some people here in cut out form.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:49, archived)
# The compo in general can always be criticised
but you're one of the few who actually stuck to what you're meant to do (the only other I've seen so far is Tahkcalb), and I don't think you can be criticised for doing that. :)
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:51, archived)
# I think the weight of opinion is that what you have done is pretty damn good
from a mundane compo idea you have made something quite special and taken the time to actually print and photograph your cut-out.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:52, archived)
# not having a go at you at all
in fact I think you've probably done the best printing and cutting out we can hope for. You appear to have a very impressive printer too by the way.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:52, archived)
# So - does this compo have to be about photoshop only, then?
'Cos personally I was admiring BBB's creative thinking and the execution of his idea, but now I feel all embarassed and stupid. Or even more embarassed and stupid.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 10:59, archived)
# ?
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:00, archived)
# Well you seem to be disparaging - or at the least very sarcastic - about BBB's effort due to it being a genuine cut-out, not photoshop.
I didn't know that the rule was Photoshop only.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:09, archived)
# no, not at all
try re-reading it without assuming I'm being sarcastic.
Also here's suggestions for things to cut out, at no point have I said this must be done in photoshop.

"Printing off and cutting out things we've seen on the computer is a fanatastic two fingers up at the protect the rainforest brigade"

"I think you've probably done the best printing and cutting out we can hope for"

"You appear to have a very impressive printer"

Silly me.
(, Thu 19 Nov 2009, 11:21, archived)
# what? sorry fella, you seem to have a bee in the bonnet about me for some reason
Printing off/rainforest was a joke about the competition (as I said once already)
I genuinely meant the second thing about printing off, its a classic B3ta meme, it was well outlined, printed on very shiny paper and therefore a surprisingly professional job

and the impressive printer, yes, mines fucking shit in comparison.

Since when did we have cross examination on throw away comments here?!

I assumed it was aimed at the compo I just wanted to check.

My printer is a Canon 350i It was only about £30 quid a few year back. I think the key here is good quality photo paper
