# that piece was actually a great work of its time which played off historical art traditions but in a modern (at the time) minimalist discourse

# It's really indefensible. Any art whose value lies only in its explanation, not its execution is good marketing, not good art. :)

# this is how most modern are justifiys itself
by coming up with some convaluted 86 page theses on the artists innner being.

and when people say, but it's a fucking tent/shed/bed/lump of horse turd that they could have done the reply comes 'yes, but you didn't'

to wit the reply is because it wasn't worth the effort as it's a piece of horse shit with little or no worth above it's original retail value.

# while trying to keep this civil, and not going off on one...
I'd agree with that to an extent - there is a lot of art that requires the explanation which isn't at all evident in the work - but as with most "high culture"
- for want of a much better term like literature, or theatre, or film etc. - art which is really worth while lies within a discourse which may be exclusive to the artist, or
to a collective, or movement etc which needs a level of understanding to appreciate the themes, motives etc. And, contextually - in the
history of art - some things seem strange now, - like 3 blank canvases - but made perfect sense at the time, like when you see really shit, over the top acting
in old films; it wasn't considered shit, or over the top at the time, it made perfect contextual sense at the time. We're just looking at it from a completely different viewpoint.
Anyway, that's my piece, :)
