This is a link post So I've had my operation. I'm now a cyborg I made this!
Yeah, sorry to spam the board again but I finally had my operation last Friday (postponed from Tuesday after a leak in the operating theatre, believe it or not!).

It went well, but I feel a little bit different now. I tried to get some thoughts down as soon as possible afterwards while it was all still fresh in my mind. I've got a long and uncertain wait until switch on now.

Anyway, just thought I'd share with you. xxx

This is a normal post Is someone letting out the secrets of the operating theatre?
Must be strange. Looking forward to switching it on...I hope it's good.

This is a normal post Well, considering I was asleep for the op and didn't have it filmed
whatever happened in there will remain unknown to me (thankfully)

This is a normal post Good point, can you fly after something like that?

(, Mon 12 Nov 2012, 13:24, , Reply)
This is a normal post I can fly - but not until the scar's fully healed
Most of the side effects are short to medium term.
(, Mon 12 Nov 2012, 13:25, , Reply)
This is a normal post Ahhh, good, I know there are some ear problems that prevent people from flying,
I flew with a tooth abcess once, it was pretty painful.

This is a normal post Yes you can fly, there are lots of people now with these fitted.
You'll need to tell the guard at security you have one because it'll set off the detectors.

You may not be able to have an MRI in the future though.

I want to have super powers and be able to fly too :-(

This is a normal post Good to hear this (no pun intended)
I was wondering how you got on. Im deaf as a post in my left ear, and partially deaf in the other. After meeting someone with a cochlear implant (who said it was ace) and hearing your story, ill have to look into it. Any hearing in my left ear is better than nowt.

Was yours done free on the NHS, or was it a pricey jobby? Digital hearing aids are crazy expensive, so im thankful for the NHS giving me one for nowt.
(, Mon 12 Nov 2012, 13:23, , Reply)
This is a normal post All on the NHS
No harm in asking your GP for a referral to your nearest cochlear implant department and getting assessed

This is a normal post What kind of Socialist hell is this?
You had a life-changing operation like that and you didn't have to pay a thing outside of your normal taxes? That's absolutely disgusting - it means that *anyone* could get that done if they wanted to.

How about the death panel? How did you manage to convince them not to kill you?

to the Cyborg club! My jaw is part metal but no electronics involved so gives no troubles that you might encounter. Good luck, and don't apologise for keeping us informed, it is interesting.

How come you have a metal jaw? Are you like Javier Bardem in SKYFALL?

This is a normal post A simple tale
My now ex husband smashed the shit out of it. Virtually blinded me in one eye at the same time. They got most of my teeth back in, but there is a lot of scaffolding. I'm worth a fair bit as scrap metal! I laugh now, but not on a cold day because it hurts.

What I really meant to say, without going on about me (which I did and I apologise), was even the most invasive surgery isn't the end of the book.
All the best books start new chapters that take you on a new adventure. This is yours, and the best of luck.

I recently had a titanium neck fitted - didn't help me hear better but I can now look up - which I was unable to do for 4 years....
