This is a question Where Did It All Go Wrong?

Woocfot asks: Tell us all about that turning point in your life when it started going downhill. Yeah, that drunken conversation with my dad when he suggested I become a civil servant. Dammit, I could have been an astronaut

What happened to society? Ask Douglas Adams.
"This planet has- or rather had- a problem, which was this: most of the people living on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movement of of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it was not the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.
And so the problem remained; lots of people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.
Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and no one should have ever left the oceans."

There you go folks, you can trust Douglas because he worked out how the universe worked.

"There is a theory that states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

Any excuse to open my well thumbed copy of the Hitch Hikers guide is a good one in my view. Were Mr Adams still with us, I am sure that he would approve of his sentiment being used in such a way. Sorry if others have already posted this, I have read through the thread and not seen it, but you know how it goes.

Douglas Adams was a prick
and his books were smug exercises in self-congratulatory twaddle of the kind enjoyed by IT wankers, Games Workshop/Iron Maiden/Terry Pratchett/Red Dwarf LARPers with spotty internet faces. I'm glad he's dead.

Just because I don't love Douglas doesn't mean I don't love you x x x

That is so nice of you, I am actually touched by it.
I love you too in that internet way that means even if we never meet, we will have shared something special.

I haven't read any of his books.
But it sounds like you have.

"my well thumbed copy of the Hitch Hikers guide"
Euphemism of the week.

This one is definitely about Star Wars.
Right?

It arouses me far too much that Star Trek fans get upset about being called "Trekkies".

(, Wed 6 Mar 2013, 16:29, closed)
Having spent the weekend at a sci-fi convention
this is only vaguely true, most Trekkies couldn't care less what you call them as long as there's another pint coming at the end of it

Pint? Of spunk?

You should also be careful about the distinction between Trekkies and Trekkers

A Trekkie
- will have an opinion on their favourite captain;
- may wear a Starfleet uniform occasionally, at parties;
- may know a few words of Klingon
- wonders what sex would be like in free-fall.

A Trekker
- will fight to the death to defend their favourite captain;
- has a hand-made Starfleet uniform with authentic, limited edition accessories;
- composes poetry in Klingon;
- wonders what sex would be like.
(, Wed 6 Mar 2013, 17:15, closed)
So you're a Trekker.

Whatever - I'm off to get drunk and have sex.

Hmmm...
That kind of puts me in the mood too. Do I wait for the wife to come home from work or do I put some Slayer on and get my silver bullet out?

Fuck it, both!

Wheelchair/Werewolf erotica?
Weirdo.

Do try to spot the jokes
Some of them are appearing for the last time before retirement.
