I've tried to like FNM, but I jsut don't see what the fuss is about.
They've got a few great songs, like Digging the Grave and Ashes to Ashes, but they really aren't that good. Certainly not good enough to headline.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 10:45, 2 replies, latest was 12 years ago)
They're just not very good, Al.
That's the main problem.

The only tune of theirs I am familiar with had some God-awful cod rap-rock shite going on. Same 'embarrassing white person' vibe as RHCP.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 10:46, Reply)
FNM were my favourite band when I was 12.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 10:50, Reply)
Jimi Hendrix was mine, from when I was about ten unti the present day.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 10:53, Reply)
When I was ten my favourites were The Beatles, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and The Shadows
Not that my musical tastes at that age were entirely informed by my dad. Oh no...
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:01, Reply)
Same here.
My love of surf guitar music, 50s r'n'r and late 60s rock all come from my old boy. He also played me the first Jesus & Mary Chain LP (a work of genius if you ask me) and various reggae artists like Burning Spear. Cheers dad.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:09, Reply)
My Dad played me The New Seekers.
Bastard.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:11, Reply)
I'm impressed that your dad was into JAMC

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:18, Reply)
He could see the parallels with the Beach Boys I think.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:19, Reply)
Dismissing your preposterous claims of quality,
we both know that headlining isn't about being good enough. If it was, AC/DC would never get to headline anything.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 10:57, Reply)
Now here, you're wrong.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 10:59, Reply)
I'm not though
The suggestion that AC/DC are the best band on any given festival lineup is bollocks. Or, a really fucking shit festival.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:02, Reply)
I would argue that the fact they're responsible for the 3rd highest selling album of all time gives them the right to headline wherever the fuck they want
Also, Thunderstruck, You Shook Me All Night Long, Highway To Hell, Back In Black, etc. They are more deserving of headlining anywhere than Blink 182, Green Day, Guns N Roses, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, The Killers, Manic Street Preachers and Kasabian put together.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:09, Reply)
He's being silly, AA. Very silly indeed.

Anyone would think he was a huge bumsexualist with stupid hair.

Should all bands have a stylistically varied career, like, er, Genesis or Paul fucking Simon?

Clue: no they should not
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:17, Reply)
God forbid I should think a band you like are shit
I'm sure that if you disliked one of my favourite bands you'd just let it lie and wouldn't harp on about it for months

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:37, Reply)
When has that ever worked?

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:30, Reply)
Define "worked"
If the purpose of doing so would be to raise a few lols, it works every time. If the purpose is to get you to shit off, I'm sure it never will. But you could say the same about you calling me a bumsexualist and posting a pic I asked you once before to take down.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:37, Reply)
Ooops, I'd forgotten about that, picture changed to some otters.
And "worked" in the sense that it may cause me to "bite".
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:41, Reply)
Cheers
And no it won't get you to bite, but that's not why the abuse gets chucked about is it.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:45, Reply)
you sound very queenie right now

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:52, Reply)
That can't be right.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:15, Reply)
Those songs you list are all the same tune with different names though
which is the crux of my problem with AC/DC. Anyway the album sales thing only underlines my original point; the right to headline is about popularity, not quality. Selling a lot of albums doesn't make you not shit. Oasis sold a lot of records.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:13, Reply)
But that's just a bollocks statement isn't it?
That accusation could be levelled far more accurately at Combichrist or other industrial bands.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:16, Reply)
It's almost like it's a matter of opinion or something

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:19, Reply)
Not really, there are quite clearly huge variations between individual AC/DC songs
they have a similar sound and style because it's the same band, in the same way that you can tell a Rush track you've not heard before having heard Spirit of Radio and Tom Sawyer, but the actual songs aren't the same.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:21, Reply)
There are huge variations between individual CombiChrist songs too
but you don't like them, so you don't want to invest time in picking out said differences.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:22, Reply)
They call fit handily into the 'terrible angsty student bed-wetter shit' bracket though.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:27, Reply)
Ignoring the fact that the above makes no grammatical sense
I disagree. Also; Hawkwind are shit.

OMLG! Individual human beings having different viewpoints shocker! Someone call Bella, the system is on the verge of smashability.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:32, Reply)
The thing is, though, Hawkwind are not shit.
That's where your argument falls down.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:36, Reply)
They are though
You know what else, CombiChrist are much better than Jimi Hendrix
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:39, Reply)
That's because of Geddy Lee's gay voice ruining both of them.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:24, Reply)
Fuck off Boyce.
Go and buy your daughter an ice cream. Oh wait, better not, you can't afford it, and she's with her mother.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:25, Reply)
RIGHT THAT'S IT.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:26, Reply)
well this is terrible

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:30, Reply)
Errr, really?

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:31, Reply)
Yeah, that's where the Mr Burger song stemmed from.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:33, Reply)
It all makes sense now.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:35, Reply)
i imagine thats why you're disappointed with your ex

I have six now.
I've got three free acoustics in the past year.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:39, Reply)
I accept the Oasis argument, but would point out that AC/DC have outsold nearly every artist to have ever existed.
And I disagree on every song sounding the same.

However, that's my opinion, and everyone is entitled to theirs.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:16, Reply)
See my reply above
I was never arguing against AC/DC being popular - they've achieved a phenomenal amount, I just don't like them
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:19, Reply)
Fair enough
I just don't think it's right for you to say they don't deserve to headline a festival is all, as they've shown, they clearly deserve it.

However, as I say, to each, their own.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:20, Reply)
That really wasn't my point
I didn't mean they don't deserve to headline - clearly they do. My point was that it's about popularity not quality, in response to Al's suggestion that FNM don't deserve to headline because he doesn't like them.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:23, Reply)
It's not about not liking them, I like some of their songs
but I just don't see where the devotion comes from. Everyone raves about Angel Dust, but apart from Be Aggressive none of the songs are really that good, I don't even think Midlife Crisis deserves the ratings it gets.

I don't feel they have a sufficiently large catalogue of good songs that a large crowd would want to see, hence they shouldn't be headlining.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:28, Reply)
I found angel dust to be a bit unpleasant when I tried it.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:29, Reply)
And I could say exactly the same about AC/DC
but there are many thousands of people who would disagree with me, just as there are thousands who would disagree with you about FNM. Saying that a band aren't good enough to headline is a redundant notion unless they haven't shifted any units, which FNM obviously did.

The Smashing Pumpkins headling Reading a few years back, that absolutely gobsmacked me. Up until that point I genuinely didn't realise they had such a following because they were so eye-wateringly awful. But then, the only time I went to Reading Suede were headlining.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:35, Reply)
You could say that about AC/DC, but you would be wrong, which is where your attempt at an argument falls down.
Also, Smashing Pumpkins headling something falls into the FNM situation. They simply shouldn't have been headling.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:39, Reply)
So, basically
You should be allowed to decide who headlines every festival according to your personal opinion, regardless of fan base or record sales?
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:43, Reply)
Of course.
I'd like a 'no shit music' policy at all festivals. Decided on by me.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:44, Reply)
Then you could decide which festival you could afford to go to
every five years
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:47, Reply)
I would be paid for my expert tastes in tickets.
I've got it all worked out.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:54, Reply)
Including how the festival would survive financially
when there's only one person in attendance, and he doesn't have any beer money?
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:01, Reply)
I'd choose Monty's festival over yours
I'm not subbing his beer consumption though.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:08, Reply)
The best act never to have headlined a festival was Daphne and Celeste.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:44, Reply)
The Hungary '54 of festival acts

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:47, Reply)
Wait, what?
If you sell more albums its because more people wanted to buy them. If more people wanted to buy your album, then you're better at doing what you do (sale records) than someone who sales less.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:49, Reply)
This is exactly my point though
Being better at making records people want to buy, and seeing that reflected in record sales, is a completely different principle to the notion of "quality" which is entirely subjective.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:52, Reply)
It is not entirely subjective
But it is true that there is no accounting for tastes.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:54, Reply)
Yeah I phrased that badly
but you know what I mean. However amateurish a band may sound to you or I, there's always someone (usually Monty) who considers them to be a "raw, unpolished gem"
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:58, Reply)
Again you are making a mistake here, with technical ability and its effect on the quality of music produced.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:04, Reply)
It's called 'Emerson Lake and Palmer Syndrome'

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:08, Reply)
Ha!
Also known as "The Satriani Effect" in some circles.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:11, Reply)
Don't get me wrong
It is entirely possible for highly technically accomplished musicians to produce worthy music, but it is most definitely not a pre-requisite.
And anyone who tries to use a band or musician's virtuosity on their instruments to prove their musical worth is probably already losing the argument.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:16, Reply)
Oh, I agree entirely
Moving Pictures by Rush is a great example of a technically accomplished band recognising the need to write enjoyable songs as opposed to just demonstrating their virtuosity.

Dreamtheater, on the other hand, are impressive for the first 30 seconds before you realise the whole fucking album goes on in that vein.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:18, Reply)
Also, while you're about: Reggae question
I'll be honest, I know bugger all about reggae, never really been able to get into it. Can you recommend any decent-but-not-too-obscure reggae tunes with good basslines?

One of my students wants to learn about reggae basslines, and I'd prefer not to have to trawl through "no woman no fucking cry" with him.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:14, Reply)
I can offer you a layman's advice, if that's any good?
I've only really dipped my toe into reggae, but if it is bass you are after then dub is probably the place to look.
The best two dub records I know of (Monty, with his greater knowledge of this genre may disagree) are Augustus Pablo/King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown and Lee Scratch Perry/Super Ape.
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:23, Reply)
That's certainly a good place to start
Cheers!
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 12:25, Reply)
I would start with
Jimmy Cliff... Firstly by watching The Harder they Come, this has music from Jimmy himself along with Desmond Decker and The Slickers
(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 13:52, Reply)
You are talking utter bollocks here.

(, Thu 29 Mar 2012, 11:11, Reply)
Oh my god, we're not going to have a disagreement about music on the internet are we?
Because I don't think the world could cope with that
