So, the courts have ruled that The Pirate Bay should be blocked by ISPs
And immediately lots of ill informed arguments commenced on the internet about whether or not copying a film is "theft" or "copyright infringment" and whether or not the BPI have actually bothered to do any research on whether or not people who download stuff actually buy more stuff too.

John Humphries took the biscuit though, for immediately saying that it was the duty of the ISP to block pornography so that children couldn't access it.

How upset would you be if they blocked porn on the internet?

ALT: Over the road from my house there has been a car parked for months with a big advert tied to the roof

It finally got moved last night (after complaints to the council) but they left two traffic cones to try and reserve the space. So this morning I moved the cones and parked my van there.

When were you last really petty? Battered, there is no need for you to answer this one.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:28, 147 replies, latest was 12 years ago)
People would always access porn through other means if it was blocked on the web. Sex sells and people have wanted to buy it for thousands of years in all sorts of formats.
I would have been a great deal more upset about this when I was a teenager.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:31, Reply)
Like they had the internet when you were a teenager.

Alright?

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:38, Reply)
Not bad thanks.
My walking plans were scuppered by rain this morning so I walked to my office from two tube stops away instead.

I think I'm becoming addicted to smugness.

You?
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:40, Reply)

I'm more addicted to pomposity than smugness.

Better thanks. Solid shits have resumed. Off to Birmingham this afternoon which is the only downer.

Sure to loosen your bowels again.
The smell of Cuppasoup and UB40 records is a dangerous combination.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:43, Reply)
I'd just go back to my collection of vintage porn stashed under my bed.
That Mary Millington must be pushing it a bit now though.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:34, Reply)
The idea of blocking porn is retarded.
All this bollocks about claiming children have been 'negatively affected' by it. If they were going to be fucked up, they were going to be fucked up. Maybe the parents should accept the blame, rather than simply pointing the finger at anyone but themselves.

Also, why would a child under 16 have a PC in their room anyway? What purpose does it serve?

Tbh, it wouldn't actually affect me too much, either way.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:37, Reply)
So they can wank over porn without their parents seeing them?

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:39, Reply)
So they can see their close family friends presenting old episodes of Art Attack on YouTube.

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:41, Reply)
Surely that's a bonus, not a reason to have one there?

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:41, Reply)
I think the parents get fed up with them wanking in the lounge during The One Show, so...

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:43, Reply)
I had a PC from the age of 12
There was no internet back then but it served many purposes. Games, homework, programming, simply learning to build and upgrade them. Its served me quite well.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:25, Reply)
See, that makes sense
And I would be happy for (when the time comes) my child to have an internetless PC in their room at that age.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:28, Reply)
There will be no such thing as an internet;ess PC by the time you spawn.
it will also be pretty much impossible to give them a phone without an internet connection.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:34, Reply)
Orange blocks adult sites by default, you have to call up to turn it off

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 10:19, Reply)
I know I am in a minority here, but I have no problem with Pirate Bay being taken down.
As for porn...i don't think it's cut and dry. I'm actually glad I didn't have access to free and easy hardcore porn when I was 12. I quite liked losing my virginity without fake expectations of what sex would be like. I'm not sure that finding a way to block it is a bad thing, as long as adults can opt in (and believe me, i'd be opting in with both feet, so to speak). It's all well and good to say 'parents should take responsibility', but some just don't and that's no reason to abandon the children.

That said, I find backing censorship quite uncomfortable too, so I really don't know where I stand at the moment.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:42, Reply)
You're correct, most porn is quite moist rather than dry.

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:44, Reply)
However most of the, ah, actors, appear to be 'cut'.

I didn't.

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:48, Reply)
Oh, I just saw the Alt.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that does things like that. I've done exactly that many times. Even when other spaces were available.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:44, Reply)
"It's all well and good to say 'parents should take responsibility', but some just don't and that's no reason to abandon the children."
It's also no reason to ban stuff for everyone. Some people are feckless dumbasses who shouldn't be allowed to vote/breed/have sharp objects etc but if we ban everything that SOME can't deal with, we end up with lowest-common-denominator laws.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:48, Reply)
I agree completely.
Or at least I would if I had been talking about banning it, rather than making it opt in.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:49, Reply)
Opt-in is a good idea
However, that brings in the spectre of pay-per-view and ISP tracking. I said in another thread re 'pirating' films that Hollywood has to change its business model or die as people are not going to the cinema like they used to. A friend went to the local flicks last week, 2 adults & 2 kids = £55.00!!
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 8:56, Reply)
Perhaps they should stop making such fucking dismal films.
Perhaps people are sick of third-rate comic adaptations and shitty remakes.

Oh hang on. No, they're not - people are dribbling retards who love that drivel. As you were.

I believe I have an explanation which I will present here in a newspaper headline style.

FUCKED-UP FECKLESS PARENTS BREED FUCKED-UP FECKLESS KIDS SHOCKER!

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:10, Reply)
He used to sell assault rifles too.

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:17, Reply)
Most of my simplistic view of feckless parents comes from several years experience in dealing with them.
Those who thought that set attendance times didn't apply to them or their chavspawn. Those that were so spineless their 9 year-olds ruled their households. Those that had never had to use a clock (never been employed) and didn't understand that timetables applied to everyone - I've seen quite a few but not all of them.

Feckless idiots TEND TO breed feckless idiots. The statistics are on my side.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:20, Reply)
To be honest, I don't know why I engaged with you in the first place.
To avoid doing a Chompy/Swipe thing that annoys everyone else, I've been happily but unobtrusively having nothing to do with you for a very long time and I don't know what made me change that this morning. I thnk I'll just go back to that.

Are people getting confused about two separate but linked arguments?
because, as far as I can see, there are two issues. One is whether UK ISPs should be forced to block the pirate bay, which they should, and the other is whether what the pirate bay do should be illegal or not, which is a matter for debate, although personally I think it should as well.

But as long as UK law remains that that copyright infringement is theft, I can't see there can be any debate about blocking Pirate Bay really.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:08, Reply)
I bet you'd love it if someone 'blocked' your 'pirate bay'

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:08, Reply)
they'd totally "interfere" with my "streaming"

(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:09, Reply)
I think it's a matter for debate whether or not they should block it too.
Since the idea of a torrent hosting site isn't of itself doing anything wrong (yes I know it effectively only exists to allow people to share torrents of copyright material, but it can also host torrents of perfectly legal stuff)
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:12, Reply)
does it?
(i mean this as an actual question, I've not been there)

If it hosts legal torrents, then as a matter of principle, you're absolutely right it could be up for debate. I thought it only hosted copyrighted stuff?
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:13, Reply)
Anyone can post anything to the site, it's just that the majority of the stuff posted is copyright.
But I can use it to host a torrent of a song that I might write, or a piece of software that I created, if I so choose.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:16, Reply)
OK, interesting point.
I suppose what's probably needed is a torrent site that only hosts legal stuff, but who the fuck is going to actually police it?
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:18, Reply)
I did try to separate them out.
But to clarify, I have no problem with Pirate Bay being blocked. Separate to that, I do think that there is an issue about children being able to easily access pornography but I have no clue what a sensible solution would be.
(, Tue 1 May 2012, 9:12, Reply)
Oh, I wasn't talking about the porn
children these days don't even bat an eyelid about DVDA. God knows how losing your virginity goes these days, they probably have fluffers.

I reckon I can still remember what we did before we had the internet.
Back to scouring the Radio Times film section for the content advice on each film "Contains nudity and sex scenes". Channel 4 will need to reintroduce its French art film seasons, etc.
I'm old enough now that I could go and buy pornographic magazines so I wouldn't need to scour the bushes for discarded grot.
Whether today's teenagers would have this resourcefulness or not, i don't know. We may have to teach them.

I do enjoy it when people say stupid shit like that with no idea how mammoth an undertaking that would be.

What they ought to be doing is forcing porn sites onto the .xxx domain they were talking about a while ago and then individuals would be able to block that domain from their own home routers.

It's the not the job of an ISP to be a fucking police force. Jesus.
