my dad did that. he texted "piss off" to one about a road accident, and was all smug with himself
the next day, i was at his house, and got a call from the rudest indian call centre man on the planet. he simply would not accept that there had been no accident, and kept asking me why i was "concealing" it.

eventually he said, "look mrs swipe..." i replied that i was not mrs swipe, and that she was dead. he paused for a moment. then he said:

"AND WAS THAT IN A CAR ACCIDENT?"

unbelievable!

Was he ringing from a school?

now you see, you jest
but a dodgepot company managing to fraudulently make their number appear as something you might recognise so that you answer it is the sort of explanation i could buy into much better than "a random person broke into the school at 5am and just happened to pick your number out of all the infinite numbers in the whole world" scenario.

And how would they manage to a) disguise their number as another one and b) manage to select one that you would happen to recognise?

no idea, some kind of fraud based on phone records or i dunno
i'm not saying it's possible. i'm simply saying, i would find it more plausible than a screaming coincidence or a spooky experience.
