it's so unpleasant not going to what appear to be mediocre chain restaurants (although wagamama looks okay)

They're like the adult equivalent of being treated to a trip to McDonalds.
Having said that, out of the three I've only ever been to Pizza Express for a birthday lunch thing. It was alright.

It's like any restaurant though, chain or otherwise.*
If the chefs are competent and take pride in their work the food will be enjoyable.
*Obviously excluding those places, like burger king and mcdonalds where 'cooking' doesn't really come into it.
