This is a question Social Networking Gaffes

Freddy Woo writes, "My school bully just friended me on Facebook!" No doubt he pokes him, and then demands his lunch money.

Personally, last month a scantily clad young woman confused me with her fiance, with whom I share a first and last name. I'm still not sure she's noticed, but she's going to be mortified when she does.

What's the biggest mistake you've made using a social networking site?

Perfect, I can tell you all a lovely story about how I was screwed out of a job because of facebook.
I was busy, slogging away at my old job. And was called into a meeting room by my manager. Nothing strange there, figured it would be some kind of review.

As soon as the door closed, my manager's happy voice turned sad.

"I'm very disappointed in you Dave"

At this point I'm thinking... "WTF?"

I was then handed an envelope containing an invitation to a disiplinary meeting, a print out of my facebook page, and a letter explaining... in no uncertain terms, that it is not O.K. to call the company you work for. "CUNTS"

The next week, the meeting.

I stated my case, they stated theirs. My union rep was nice and supporting. And I was dismissed.

So, thanks facebook. You steaming bunch of wankers.

I'm having trouble seeing how this is Facebook's fault.
That said, surely what you should have done is looked at the page and said "brilliant, does this mean you're bringing in a programme of sweeping changes to try and rectify the obvious worker antipathy towards the company? Sweet, I'll take my bonus for bringing to your attention in cash."

Your stated case
Didn't involve the words "but you _ARE_ cunts!" did it?

Uberdeity
I was going to ask the very same question.

What else could you say?

I was soooo tempted
But was advised that they might sue me. :(

who was this company
(that you now CLEARLY regard as non-cunts)
(, Thu 11 Sep 2008, 16:54, closed)
Oh no
I'm not that silly.

If you really want to know, PM me. I'm not mentioning their name here.

If you mentioned their company name on Facebook, fair enough
If not, then legally you are entitled to your own opinion and they can't say feck all.

They were cunts..
..for snooping on your personal life, whatever you wrote about them or anyone. Better off out of there if they are trying to encroach on that; granted it's pretty common practise these days for companies to internet-stalk their employees. It's been a contributary factor in my walking out of a few jobs. Could I really be prosecuted for dissing them online? Cos I have, and anyone can read it if they know my username on the right message boards. Actually, fuck it, they can try and prosecute me - I wont pay a penny until I'm thrown in jail and the case gets some exposure. This sort of thing really winds me up as I've been in similar situations to you, just without the sacking.

This is the reason why we need to start pressing for a Bill of Rights in this country
Our freedom of speech is taken away from us time and time again in circumstances such as this. Everyone at my work are cunts too, although I've told that to their faces and they still wont sack me.
(, Thu 11 Sep 2008, 18:59, closed)
sorry, but I'm not sure freedom of speech has anything to do with this
If you write "X company are cunts" on a publicly viewable site, and you work for X company, you're kind of asking for it. It's not facebook's fault. I'm not saying that you aren't unlucky, just that I'd regard it as a swift lesson learnt rather than blaming some website for your own error.

Just saying.

It's nothing to do with freedom of speech, and frankly I'm sick of people using that term when they don't understand what it means.

Your right to free speech doesn't allow you to say anything in any context at any time to anyone you like, and not face any consequences.

sacked for blogging
petite anglaise (former colleague of a friend of mine) was dismissed for her blog.

subsequently she has had a book published and has quite a fan base.

and her court case included a debate as to the correct translation of the word "twunt"

I would claim a mate hacked my account
it would be worth a try. Otherwise bollocks to 'em.
