I almost know how he felt. I was in a hutch at a synchrotron changing a sample when I heard the shutter opening and closing. I left rather hurridly, expecting to see a permanent shadow of myself on the wall. Luckily, it was an auxillary shutter and not the main one.

And slowly and deliberately improve the art style, all the while pretending you can't do any better than this but always making sure you're actually about twice as good as the cartoons you're drawing so that you've got a buffer for when you get lazy/sick/preoccupied. It worked for Questionable Content. (Come to that, it worked for PhD Comics, too.)
