# .png? Learn your filetypes guy.
.pngs are best for block colours and black lines, they're like .gifs only unoptimised.
You want .jpg for photos.

drop a PNG to 128 colours and it should be pretty much the same size as the GIF with 128 colours. i've noticed people tend to forget and leave them as RGB with an alpha channel.

most people who complain about png files simply don't know how to optimise them - they can usually be optimised to smaller than a gif
