Couple of useful pointers:
Try to keep the filesize less than 100k
Also TOAPS are much funnier if you use comic sans

.pngs are best for block colours and black lines, they're like .gifs only unoptimised.
You want .jpg for photos.

drop a PNG to 128 colours and it should be pretty much the same size as the GIF with 128 colours. i've noticed people tend to forget and leave them as RGB with an alpha channel.
