then it died completely so I sent it back to HP and they replaced the motherboard, fan, heatsink and graphics card

Now it works a treat - it's like having a new laptop in a knackered case :)

So, to answer the previous question, it's a mixture of iron nitroprusside (red blocks) and an unknown blue-green insoluble impurity.

metal pencil sharpeners! my colleague at work recently got in trouble for burning a hole through a heatproof matt AND solid wooden science desk after sticking magnesium pencil sharpeners in the bunsen burners in front of her y8 class! xx
