nitty grittyis a term that was used during the slave trade.
when a slave owner got 'bored and frisky' and wanted some back door action, he would use the term 'to go and get down to the nitty gritty', then proceed to go and have his way with whatever he fancied.

I don't think nitty-gritty has anything to do with slavery.Of course, I'm happy to be corrected if you have a source.
