ah, they were the fine days
when all we had was staggeringly blinkered wild optimism. I fear the modern England team are too good for that, so I've had to move on to anguished, spleen-chewing anticipation.

that's why you will always be disappointed.
Every 2 years before a major competition the press weave some odd magic that makes you England fans have the strange notion that 'this time' you actually have a team capable of winning something whereas the reality is that England have never been a decent side, not even when they won the world cup. ( they were just the best of a very bad bunch ).
When you have been watching football for over 30 years it becomes quite sad to watch the misguided optimism that England has for it's national team.
