This is a link post Pub landlord jailed for his beliefs.
Sorry board, but as a smoker who has stayed out of bars since july 1st
2007, I feel the need to tip my hat to a man (Nick Hogan) who won't be pushed around.

This is a normal post Hear, hear.
Even as a non-smoker who doesn't like to sit amongst dingy, stifling smoke, I'm against this ban. There should be non-smoking bars so that people who don't want to be surrounded by smoke can go and enjoy themselves. However, there should also be smoking bars where people can go and enjoy a nice puff with their pint and so forth. Going from one extreme, where there was smoke everywhere, to the other is no good thing. Everyone should have the choice to go somewhere they enjoy.

This is a normal post Thanks vix0r
I've got n-o-o-o-o-o problem with segregation, I'll happily go into
another room (or pub for that matter), I just think a total ban is unfair.

This is a normal post I think they did try to do that
There was a weatherspoons somewhere that banned smoking before the ban took place, only problem was that hardly anyone went to it. No bar is going to want to change to non smoking when they know it's going to kill profits.

I just moved over to the US and the state I live in a good law, if the bar sells food then there is no smoking allowed. When the bar stops serving food the smoking is allowed. Best of both worlds.

This is a normal post I think you are missing the point of the ban somewhat
it is more to do with stopping employees from being forced to work in a smoky environment, more than giving non smokers a pleasant place to stay. The ban includes all places of work, not just pubs. Punters can always chose to go somewhere else, staff don't really have that choice.

It's also about discouraging people from taking up smoking in the first place. I dunno about the figures in England/Wales, but in Scotland (where we had the ban a year before the rest of the UK) we have some of the worst numbers for heart disease, cancer and strokes in western Europe. Smoking is a major factor in all of these.

Only time will tell if the ban has long-term health benefits, but in the meantime, smoke-free pubs are just a bonus. Or a curse, depending on how clean the toilets are.

An amusing side story... a few years before the smoking ban, my old employer decided to make the entire company campus non-smoking. The only place smoking was permitted was in a few bus-shelter like smoking areas outside. After the smoking ban, since the shelters were almost entirely enclosed, the were defined as 'indoors' by the smoking band and it was actually illegal to smoke in them.

This is a normal post I'm a smoker and I agree with the ban
Just because I choose to smoke doesn't mean I should force other people to as well.

This is a normal post It's one thing enjoying it
but if it harms other people then it should be banned. The only problem I have with the ban is that now everyones smoking on the bloody high-streets and outside the front doors of places (even though its disallowed, its still done).

Everybody knows that smoking is harmful so I don't see a problem with banning something that is dangerous. It makes sense to me.

This is a normal post i was a bartender/manager through our local smokeban process.
99% of our smoking customers and staff griped at first and then admitted they liked the fact that they smoked less as a result. 100% of our nonsmoking customers were elated and came to the bar far more often, thereby increasing business.

This is a normal post Bollocks.
If I were to kick up a fuss about not being able to saw asbestos up in a bar, noone would listen. Yet for some reason smokers seem to think I should be forced to get lung cancer, simply because they can't be fucked to go outside.

This is a normal post because passive smoking is equally as dangerous as asbestos
good point, well made there!

This is a normal post I spent a week playing in a band in an underground jazz bar
without good ventilation. This was in 05 before the ban. I ended up with a cough. 2 weeks later the doctor said I had developed "condition based asthma" because of some sort of "antigen" overexciting my lungs for a prolonged period.
I went from being a cyclist who never needed any sort of medical help, to needing an inhaler every time I run or cycle in cold weather.
It's limited my training ability more than I imagined it could. On a dry cold night I loose out about about 50 yards on guys I'd normally beat.

So fuck smoking in bars. I dont care if you wanna smoke. but I love not having minging hair and clothes the next day. Sweet.

This is a normal post I was a 20 a day smoker
The the smoking ban came in. and I couldn't be arsed to walk outside all the time so I went down to about 5 a day. Because I wasn't smoking so much it started to taste worse and worse until I just didn't want to smoke anymore. So the smoking ban stopped me smoking and as smoking is smelly, dangerous, dirty, fucking retarded and will kill you I am glad. Its all very well saying "freedom of choice" etc. but if we are honest most of us know that nearly all smokers had their first cigarettes before they were 16 and that it wasn't for pleasure or to relax, it was to either fit in, be rebellious or to look cool. I say ban it outright. Its a fucking disgusting habit and I fucked loved smoking.

actually is it alright if I say "don't ban it"?

I'm in my second week of giving up by the way. I'm down to 3-5 a day from 12-20 ;)

I don't think I should have the right to stop people doing things just because I don't like it. Unless there is direct negative effect to my well being by someone excercising their rights, no judiciary should have the right to intervene.

A ban with never capture the subtlety of any real world event. IMO.
