This is a normal post Arab woman out of her depth with London
Generally if you attack someone with a bottle, you can expect little in the way of mercy, male or female

This is a normal post Herein lies the rub
It's unfamiliar to me, but it sounds like they're from London. Hence my sweeping generalisation above. Right?

I will concede that I have actually seen Chas n Dave live though.

And it was excellent, and not in an ironic way.

This is a normal post Perhaps, but any London-area accent is particularly annoying to Northern ears
We can tell that some are stronger than others, but anywhere 'dahn sarf' has the same 'Laahndaahn' twang, to us. Whereas West-Country accents sound just fine, and surprisingly similar to a Yorkshire accent.

I'm sure the same happens to you guys — I wouldn't expect anyone south of Birmingham to be able to tell a Lancashire accent from a Yorkshire accent.

haha

almost no-one in London sounds like a cockney, not that anyone north of Watford believes it.

I stayed with some friends in Macclesfield a few years back, and their next-door neighbour came round. He had to go and do a job in Milton Keynes the next day and was saying how he didn't want to go because he "can't stand cockneys".

I pointed out that he was unlikely to meet any in Milton Keynes. He said "Oh sorry mate, I didn't mean you, you're alright."

"No, I'm not offended. I'm not a cockney. But Milton Keynes is about 50 miles north of London."

"Yeah, but you know what they're like. It's all apples & pears, Torville & Dean."

"They're from fucking Nottingham!"

"Yeah, but you know what I mean."

This is a normal post Snobbery goes both ways
I've *done* London, for my sins, and in hindsight stayed there about four years too long. I know how the North sees south of Watford, but I also know how the South sees north of Watford.

Hang on. Since when was Watford the fucking Schiffen Line?

This is a normal post "from Roman times" apparently
The Watford Gap is located at a minor gap between two slight hills in the county of Northamptonshire, England. Engineers from Roman times onwards have found it to be an appropriate route connecting the Midlands with the South East.
In a width of 400 metres (1,300 ft) the A5 road, the West Coast Main Line railway, the M1 motorway and a branch of the Grand Union Canal all traverse the gap in parallel.

This is a normal post Cool
I find this sort of geographical history fascinating. It reminds me of the Danelaw, which I always considered to be the traditional border between the southern poofs and the northern monkeys..

The Watford Gap is Checkpoint Charlie.

and yes, I admit to viewing anywhere north of Gloucestershire as the inspiration for the Mad Max movies.

Edit: and I think you'll find it's snobbery on our part, jealousy on yours.

Actually the announcements on the tube now sound like Glados.

This is a normal post Watford Gap
Is actually in Northamptonshire - fucking miles away from Watford and closer to Rugby. It's the bloody Midlands.

Most people seem to forget this fact and just assume it's Watford.

This is a normal post We in the South know this.
We use this as a ruse to distract Northerners from the *actual* South. They stop at the services, think "There's not much here, is there, like?" then fuck off back where they came from!

The filthy oiks!
