This is a link post Russian Hip Hop
Well, not exactly. It's footage of Russian and Ukranian dances with Run DMC's It's Like That dubbed over it.

is a lot more exciting if you never saw The Old Grey Whistle Test in the late 70s or early 80s - every week without fail they'd have an album track played out over an old Felix The Cat cartoon or newsreel or something. I still can't see a Max Fleischer cartoon without hearing "Whole Lotta Love" in my head.

That's AWESOME. Not just funny, it's interesting - I never noticed or realised that Russian dancing can share the same kind of format (the Battle) as breakdancing. Kudos.

This is a normal post I hear this kind of dancing
is related to 'Hopak', Ukrainian, I think. Hopak is a martial art and I think the dancing may be a warm up for battle.

We call it 'cossack dancing', the cossacks were/are bloody scary warriors; that's why it comes across as a dance-off.

That's awesome. Russians invented break! Seriously though, some of those moves are freakin' intense. Check out 1:03 - sit down son, he's got you pwned. By the way, it reminds me of pretty much the inverse of this video - kids getting gully to a Russian pop song:

Woo, like this muchly.

I learnt the basic cossack dance crouch-low-scissor-kick-legs move for a school play many many years ago, and ever since I seem to have almost inevitably ended up doing it every time I'm dancing. It gets interesting trying to do it in a crowded night-club without kicking people in the ankles!

Now I'm off to try to learn some of the more funky variants those guys did- hope I don't pull anything...
