want a drink of cold water
but can't be arsed to wait for it to cool down in the fridge. Fill a water bottle, stick a good few ice cubes in and give it a good shake. The ice being mixed up in the water will lower the temperature quicker than just putting the water in the fridge or even in the freezer.

keep a bottle in the freezer with a small amount of water already in it.

To make it even colder
get a large bowl add tap water, ice and a crap load of salt.

then chuck you bottle of water in, a few minutes later, cold drinks.

*also works with warm beer.

by shaking it up, you increase the speed that the heat from the water melts the ice (or in another sense, it moves the cold from the ice all through the water faster). if it just sits there, as most people do, it takes ages for the ice to melt and do its job ie the cold stays localised.
This is a trick a good bar tender would be well familiar with. Chuck some ice in and shake your cocktail.

Yes, but you get on with the business of having the drink and don't let them melt.
Ice from the freezer is about -18C (depending on the setting), you put it in a drink and it will draw the heat from the liquid to raise the temperature of the ice. Then, it needs a shit load of heat energy to turn the 0°C ice to 0°C water.

Yeah
first time I did this, I was surprised at how quickly it works. Throw a few cubes of ice in a cocktail shaker, and shake it up with a water/rum/cordial/sour mix. 30s of shaking and the ice is almost gone and the outside of the shaker starts frosting up. Impressive.
