As I say, I stick to £5 at a time, as it's an amount of money I wouldn't be too fussed about losing.

I worked with a fellow whose only vice was gambling.
He had a separate account for it, into which he'd put ten grand. After a decade, during which at times he'd had over a hundred grand in there, he had roughly ten grand.

Not compared to the return of the FTSE during that time. He'd have been better off working with a broker to do that.
After ten years of sensible hedged investing he could have made £30k easily.
