Something for the evening?
We seem to be in a phase of evening dullness at the moment.

It'll change. It always does.

it's OK
I'm back.

today I learnt that I need to wear an eyepatch when doing archery
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 20:13, Reply)
Do you not have an eyepatch with your pirate costume?

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 20:18, Reply)
nope
which is a shame, I have all the other pirate stuff
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 20:21, Reply)

Today I learnt that people who live in Dalston are fucking disgusting.
And that the Polish cleaners I'm supposed to be in charge of don't listen to a thing I say. I'm sure they were pretending they couldn't speak English.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 20:17, Reply)
Shout "Osram" at them.
Apparently it means "I shit on your head" in Polish and explains why Osram lightbulbs never sold well in Poland.

Evening TD
I just made my stuffed chicken with a twist - goats cheese and scotch bonnet pickle inside. It was fab. I always get a lovely feeling of satisfaction after eating something I made myself from scratch.

I only creep on here in the evening
And only on a few evenings at that, but it's been my thing for a lot of years.

Sometimes there's a lot of habituees, sometimes there's not many.

The whole impersonating people thing is fucking bent.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 20:53, Reply)
Yeah mr fake name is an odd one
His raison d'κtre seems to be seeing if he can fool other people into thinking he is whoever he is pretending to be.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 20:58, Reply)
He's fooled me a few times
but that's because I don't look too closely at user names.

He had an entire conversation with AA last week as Darth.
No one seemed to notice and it was just an entirely ordinary chat about nothing in particular, football, etc.
It is very strange.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:05, Reply)
But it *is* one of us though
so it would make it easier for him/her/it to impersonate anyone successfully.

I just don't see the point, as you say.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:07, Reply)
I hate people who pretend to be someone else.
It's unnecessary, and can be quite hurtful at times.

Most things are.

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:41, Reply)
It was OK.
It was billed as the JAMC's attempt to do Lollapolooza in Britain, but it didn't take off. The venue I saw them at was half empty. The gig could have been so much better with a packed house.

And JAMC only played for 25 minutes. As was their trademark, I guess.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:38, Reply)
I got a 1 hour JAMC gig in Liverpool
Primarilarly because they had James as support who were better by a long way.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:42, Reply)
Slayer are playing a 1 hour and fifteen minute set next friday.
I'm almost a bit annoyed at having shelled out £40 for the ticket since I'm not remotely bothered about the other bands on the line up. But still, 75 minutes of slayer is worth it.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:44, Reply)
Are you going to I'll be Your Mirror to see them?

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:47, Reply)
Yes. I am.

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:48, Reply)
Me too.
The rest of the line up should be pretty good. I'm looking forward to seeing Sleep and The Melvins are good value too.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:54, Reply)
The description of Sleep put me off, I'm not much of a fan of hour long albums devoted to weed.
But I like the Melvins, though I don't really know any of their songs that well. I'm just keen to see their stage show as I suspect they are a bit crazy live.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:56, Reply)
Whereas that appeals to the old stoner in me.
I saw Melvins in 2005 at the Slint ATP and they were great.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:02, Reply)
Y'see I like that about JAMC
In my previous band we decided to never play longer than 30 minutes (inspired by them).
No one can really be bothered to watch any more than that.
And I fucking hate encores too.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:44, Reply)
You see, that's the most utter load of bollocks I've ever heard in my life.
I watched the cure play for 3 hours, it was amazing.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:47, Reply)
See below
The Cure could carry on for ages for me.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:50, Reply)
I'm talking generally
There are some exceptions, largely depending on how much you love a band, or what genre you're seeing (three hour gigs are kind of required for space rock bands).
Some bands can carry off a longer gig - Pulp are mentioned up there, a great live band - but most bands could do with truncating their sets a bit.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:52, Reply)
Depends what you're doing
The thought of a Grateful Dead 12 hour gig bores me.

You get a creative band and I could watch.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:48, Reply)

that's such a horrible way to put it
why can't birds just be nice b3th?
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:41, Reply)
Because they're human, Quentin.
It's exactly the same reason that men can't just be nice.
Humans are flawed. Expectations are regularly disappointed. Hopes are regularly dashed.

Frankly, it's a wonder any of us can live with anyone else at all.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:46, Reply)
hey why so cynical?

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:55, Reply)
I don't know, TD.
It's just the way the world rolls, I guess. When I wasn't working I had very little time to post as most of my spare time was taken up with looking for work and running the house. Now I'm back working I can't post through the day and evenings are busy running the house. It's a vicious circle.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:30, Reply)
I'm working most of the time
Delighted that you are too, guv.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 21:40, Reply)
My days are never less than filled at the moment.
Which, considering I've had days where I've been twiddling my thumbs for hours on end is no bad thing. Alnwick DSS caller office springs to mind - me, a small room separated by a glass screen and an average of ten people a day spread over six hours springs to mind.

We met the most useless twat ever at PC World yesterday
and by their standards, that's pretty fucking spectacularly useless.
It was just a coincidence that he was a Nigerian with almost non-existent skills in English.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:08, Reply)
nah, language is a big barrier in communication
if he can't understand what your going on about then how's he supposed to help?
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:09, Reply)
No, he understood
He just couldn't do it.
I've never worked in PC World before, but I have used a computer. This idiot couldn't work his own firm's website. I had to tell him how to do it, and I'd only seen the ordering software two minutes before.
As I said, it was only a coincidence that he was foreign. And usually, most foreigners' grasp of English is better than a lot of Brits' grasp of other languages.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:12, Reply)
i sort of know the danica girl on channel 4 at the mo

Or even their own for that matter.

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:16, Reply)
This.
as a linguist, I'm constantly shocked at how Brits behave abroad.
Mind you, I find learning languages easy, so I can't understand how anybody would find it difficult.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:18, Reply)
Behave linguistically?

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:19, Reply)
Well, you know.
Talking loudly and slowly to foreigners. Or talking in English about people, and expecting them not to know what you're saying.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:22, Reply)
Oi, Pedro! I said "BREAKFAST"!

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:29, Reply)
I once spoke Spanish to some staff at a hotel in Benidorm
And was treated like royalty for the rest of my stay.
You'd think I was the first English person to try it.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:36, Reply)
You were and too right!

(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:39, Reply)
I can memorize phrases quite easily
but my problem is that I have no deep understanding of the rules of english grammar which makes learning grammatical rules in other languages really hard.

I feel I would have been much better at french and german if I really understood what conjugating a verb meant in english before trying to do it in foreignese.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:23, Reply)
You know how to do it in English
But you don't know what it's called. Nominative, accusative, genetive or dative. Predicate etc. WTF?
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:26, Reply)
Exactly.
So trying to actually understand what you're doing in a foreign language is quite hard.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:35, Reply)
Abso.
Latin and German are the gayest I know.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 22:36, Reply)
We don't really conjugate verbs in the same way.
I do, he does, they do.
You would know not to say 'I does, he do, they does' but probably not why.
And English has so many irregular verbs 'I go, I went' etc. We should really start teaching kids languages when they're four or five, they way they do on the continent.
Mind you, English will probably always be a lingua franca, so we'll always be able to get away with not bothering.

When I went on the german exchange in sixth form
I sat in on several of their english lessons. As a foreign language it's taught so differently to how you learn it as a kid. I couldn't tell you what the dative is, or nominative or any of that crap.

If it's the stuff they make over in Rossendale, that usually goes out at about £5/kg wholesale. The supply lines for Croxley kudos are limited and not always reliable, so you could expect to pay anything between £2 and £50/kg for that. Rarest of all is Monmouthshire kudos, that's up to £100/kg and your maximum order size is 1kg.

No, we privatised so that the public could pay way over the odds an inferior and steadily declining service, and for governmental bodies to abrogate all responsibility for said service while still raking in the tax for it.
It's the best known way to avoid getting clobbered under the Sale Of Goods Act.

There is a core of employees dedicated to the service, and a core of management dedicated to that.

There will always be a company prepared to work on lower margins. In our area my former employer and increasingly TLC of Bradford.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 23:12, Reply)
They're expanding then.
If I remember rightly, a few years ago their operations were pretty much limited to semi-rural South Yorkshire and a few services round Hemsworth/South Elmsall way.

TLC have always been Bradford
Centrebus started out from Huddersfield and have been expanding since.

Great to work for as a menial, but not too good when you need to manage a quart into a pint pot. That's their model. I couldn't work with it but I learned a lot.
(, Tue 15 May 2012, 23:23, Reply)
Yes it does.
I still drive because I love it, but a casual driver - sounds daft but there's a lot of us about - won't work for less than £9 an hour.

That's possibly misleading - I'm a good driver with a good reputation. There are bad drivers working for ropey firms for less.

Not yet.
Despite being told last week I (along with 3 other FTC's) could apply for a funding officer role, we were then called into a meeting to be told the unions had got wind of this and objected very strongly, to the point where management decided it wasn't worth risking any long, drawn out grievance cases.

On the plus side, if our current colleagues succeed in their applications our contracts will probably be extended as a result to fill the gaps, and common thinking is that those who succeed in their promotion are unlikely to revert to their current grade.
