if youre looking for a good topic for a book to write,
Then you could write one about the person who got up late and rushed to the train station and made his train by a few seconds instead of having to wait 20 min for the next one... I'll call it "a life story about a man who rushed and just about made his train by a couple of seconds, who was called Pops"
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:15, Reply)
I'd prefer to read that than the piss-poor 'sci fi' dribblings of 'Ray Bradbury'.
FahrenSHITE 451 I say.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:23, Reply)
William Gibson
The 'Burning Chrome' collection of short stories* was excellent as was the Sprawl trilogy. I loved 'Idoru' but wasn't as impressed with 'Pattern recognition'.
I like most of the old-school classic writers - Asimov, Pohl, Heinlein et al.

*Johnny Mnemonic was a great short story but a shit film.

...Feersum Endjin (SP) - found it stupidly hard to wade through the spelling so I didn't bother - a bit like Gonz's stuff only way too long.

Douglas Adams, I liked him.
he died, sadtimes :'(

I liked Adams too
More for the Hitch hikers guide series than the Dirk Gently stuff though.

Sorry, Adams gets 9 Pratchetts
for being a smartarse knobhead who was considerably less clever than he and his 'fans' believed him to be. He was the 'Red Dwarf' of authors and I for one don't miss him a bit.

Or prequels - at least none written by Brain Herbert!

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:36, Reply)
William Gibson is good.
But Sci Fi and Fantasy are epically bent. Just because a book is massively long, it doesn't mean you have to be extra clever to read it. There's a very deep strain of hilariously misplaced intellectual grandstanding which is pretty much unique to Sci Fi and fantasy fans.

There's a very good reason that the vast bulk of that stuff is ignored by literature academics. It's because it's shit.

Hope this helps.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:26, Reply)
I like Gibson's work because it's not overly-explained
It's also kinda believable, instead of the huge sweep of, say, the Dune books, it takes place in a world you and I could inhabit.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:31, Reply)
believabity has fuck all to do with it. Neuromancer's power is in its treatment of the posthuman in the modern gothic.
As any fule kno.

William Gibson is a fucking bent 'cyber' spastic.
Therefore, by association, so are you.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:39, Reply)
I grew up onsftuff like Heinlien
ANd while I've gone off sci-fi abit lately I still think the genre has a lot to offer it's one of the few that routinely explores new ideas and 'what if' questions and is more rsiatnt to becomeiong formulaic than most genres.

I don't think I'd read any or Bradbury's stuff other than Farenheight 451, which was good but, to my mind had dated rather. I imagine it was quite groundbreaking in it's day.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:28, Reply)
It was written in the McCarthy era.

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:29, Reply)
makes sense.
Like I ay, at the time, probably epic, these days, not so much, but then I fell similarly about Shakespeare so I'm obviously wrong.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:31, Reply)
lol at sci fi not being formulaic.
A genre characterised by sticking to a well established, heroically bent formula is not formulaic.

Well done CQ.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:30, Reply)
What's the Sci Fi formula then?

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:31, Reply)
futurism, sciency stuff etc.
The fact that it is a very prescriptive and didactic genre.

Y'know?
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:32, Reply)
That's not a formula, that's a genre.
that's like saying all romance novels involve "romance" and as for them being didactic, that heavily depends on the authour and your own reflections on the book.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:35, Reply)
it's a formula. there has to be certain elememts to qualify it as sci fi, hence the formula.
And didacticism runs deep in the genre, it's one of the many reasons why it is so laughable as reflective culture.

See also it not being anywhere near as clever a genre as its fans think it is.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:39, Reply)
It's a formula alright. A lazy, tedious formula for lonely turds from IT with BO.

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:41, Reply)
"lonely turds from IT with BO"
haha
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:44, Reply)
What your'e saying here is that all novels are formulaic
and have to be in order to fit into a genre, but you're focussing it entirely on sci-fi/fantasy. You're being intellectually dishonest.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:41, Reply)
no.
That is explicitly not what I am saying.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:43, Reply)
"it's a formula. there has to be certain elememts to qualify it as sci fi, hence the formula"
Applicable to all genres.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:44, Reply)
I think it was the great Rory Lyon who once put it best:
'EastEnders in space'
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:45, Reply)
Well it's not explicit is it, if that's exactly how it comes across.

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:51, Reply)
It's ok though, because it's sci fi that thinks it's cleverer than it is.
Sci fi.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:58, Reply)
You're talking such bollocks, and being so proud of yourself.
There is nothing at all to be proud of about dismissing an entire swathe of culture which has been popular and celebrated since HG Wells.
That's willful ignorace and bloody mindedness you should just kill yourself.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:45, Reply)
I think you should go to the transporter bay and calm down.

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:46, Reply)
That's what you've got to defend your stance?
Talk about your intellectual grandstanding. Some sci-fi/fantasy books are formulaic, yes. Fantasy in particular. To dismiss both genres as such is ignorance.

Ah, you're getting old and grumpy.
Fair enough. I'm pushing that age when anything on Radio 1 is defined as an unholy racket.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 10:56, Reply)
Didn't say you WERE a surly teenager, just to think of you as a surly teenager.
Also, I've been your age sonny, there's no guarantee you'll reach mine.

It's not likely, in truth.

I wish more people responsible for sci fi were dead.

I would be delighted if the science fiction section of every bookshop and library looked like this.

And my wife has less stretch marks than you, despite having given birth.

I read really quite a bit of science fiction, when I was younger.
I am a huge fan of Jules Verne, but to my mind the majority of it pales hugely into insignificance in comparison with the writing of someone like Dostoevsky, it's just throwaway shite - which has its place - but is on the whole a worthless heap of shit.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:17, Reply)
Do you need a hug?

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:18, Reply)
I'd prefer a couple of grand if I'm honest.

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:19, Reply)
At the risk of sounding like a chutney like Dozer
the books which have affected me most in the past few years have been Crime and Punishment and Papillon.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:23, Reply)
Is that where you hide your stash?

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:39, Reply)
Well I think you're all being very mean to sci fi.
What's it done to you? Nothing. It sits on its own in the corner of the classroom, minding its own business, occasionally adjusting its glasses and being mildly jealous of the cool kids like psychological thrillers and whatnot. Every now and again it checks out the arse of some chick-lit romance and wishes it was handsome enough to pull her.

It doesn't deserve all this bullying.

Fantasy does, though. At least sci fi doesn't dress up and run around in fields with gay foam swords.

That real adult people genuinely do that shit is beyond my comprehension.

what, having fun, harming no one, regardless of what people think of them?
Terrible
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:29, Reply)
exactly, worse than 10 hitlers arguing over who built the best gas chambers.

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:32, Reply)
I'm inclined to agree with you Comrade.
Although I do find it a little odd.

but I admire their ability to genuinely enjoy themselves and not care that people regard them as a joke. I think the world would be a better place if more people were like them.

like the BNP?

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:37, Reply)
y'see the 'harming no one' bit in my original post?
as long as the BNP can keep to that, then I give them leave to exist.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:39, Reply)
I'm not sure the BNP hold to that
Mainly because they have a terrible effect on my blood pressure.
(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:39, Reply)
this would be your problem

(, Thu 7 Jun 2012, 11:41, Reply)
It's the eternal problem
I don't agree with what they say at all. I think it's repugnant. However, I will defend their right to say it.

Which is why I found internet ramblings from idiotic monarchists saying people who don't believe in the Jubilee should either shut up or leave the country to be very offensive indeed.
