The yeast carboantes it when you put it in the bottle to finish off.
You get a suprising amount of fizz

I'd imagine it's easier to make brown beers at home than decent lagers.

Both about the same, but lagers can take months in the bottle to become nice.
So it's basically quicker to make ale than lager but the process is pretty much the same.
