Pearost.
When I lived in Glasgow, I got dragged to Edinburgh for the fringe by my then grrlfiend. because "Some of my friends are doing a piece, yeah? You'll love it stuj, just leave your preconceptions at the door and open your mind to the possibilities of ART."

It was more than a bit shit. And we broke up not long after.
Something to do with my friends being alkies and drugged-up metalheads, and hers being a bunch of Withiels that in any decent society would have been drowned in a bucket of bleach.
A couple of years later Spaced had the episode that took the piss out of performance art, and I remember pointing at the telly going "That's EXACTLY what the fucking Fringe was like".

Oh yeah, you can go to that pub where Begbie went mental in Trainspotting. Bonus points if you manage to chuck a pint glass BEFORE you get chibbed.

Weather in the nw is a bit damp. Great.

I do like Edinburgh but not in this weather,

(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 13:37, Reply)
I havent been to Edinburgh in years
But there used to be a great pancake place on Princes Street.

Rose street always used to be good for pubs. Also if you go across Waverley bridge and head up the hill towards the unis etc keep an eye out to your right as that goes into the older parts and there are some great pubs down there

This place is very good & not too expensive: www.lescargotbleu.co.uk/site_html_escargot_bleu/pages_web/escargot_bleu_french_restaurant_edinburgh.html

Problem you're going to have is that pretty much everywhere will be booked already for during the festival.
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 13:39, Reply)
Thanks for that.
I will give them a call.

Predictably I fucking hate Monday.
Yeah thanks, Bob Geldof.

altalt: As a resident of The Athens Of The North, I'm going to a show at the Fringe tonight. And tomorrow night. Cos I'm all fucking class, me.

Drinking - the Grassmarket, Victoria Street, The Cowgate, George IV Bridge and The Royal Mile. The New Town can GTFO.

Eating - The Magnum is very good, Omar Khayyam at Haymarket for an Indian. Kublai Khan for a spot of Mongolian.

At last. A non-McBeef expert.
Thanks. Very helpful.
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:17, Reply)
Depends what you're looking for really.
The Grassmarket area is generally very good, but will be absolutely fucking mobbed. Lots of stuff going on - street 'performances' and all that gash. The Royal Mile is pretty good for that stuff as well.

George Street (just behind and parallel to Princes Street) is the place to go if you're after posh, trendy pubs and clubs. Generally the kind of people who'd pay £10 for a salad would probably go there.
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:30, Reply)
Is there a decent part of town that won't be mobbed?
Tram ride away?

How late does everything open until?
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:34, Reply)
All of the central areas will be mobbed - in particular the Old Town (Grassmarket, Cowgate, etc)
as that's where most of the Fringe venues are located. The New Town - George Street, the West End etc may be slightly quieter as there are fewer venues round there.

The tram is a crock of shit and only runs between the airport and Queen Street.

Pubs and clubs etc will be open late - 1,2,3am - just varies really.
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:37, Reply)
Thanks, Rev.

(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:40, Reply)
No probs.

(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:45, Reply)
Actually, come to think of it, Stockbridge is a really nice part of town
Just a bit north of the centre - 10-15 min walk away. Loads of pubs and some decent restaurants. Some Fringe venues though, so it won't be quiet, but should be ok-ish.
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:40, Reply)
Grassmarket drinking is excellent
Ended up in a rather nice Indians just up the bank from there, away from the pink triangle

(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:37, Reply)
You want to ask McBeef about that.
He doesn't drive and saw an advert for it on the telly.

He is likely a world authority on "car insurance" and surmise that it is "fucking shit".
(, Fri 1 Aug 2014, 14:39, Reply)
i just get a broker to do it
i'd rather pay a few extra quid for him to do it than have to fill in shitty online questionnaires or speak to people. that's time i could be in the PUB.
