Can I reiterate my request for some functionality in glassco.cx
that allows you to go "up" a post from your search results? It's got me in hot water today with the missus as this post describes - www.b3ta.com/board/6537559 - and a bit of context for that quote would have saved me a whole load of heartache.

robtoo edit: Not sure what happened here...

If I search for your id on glassco.cx, go back a couple of pages to that easily-misunderstood post, and click the 'More' link, I get sent to this page which provides the context.

If I use the searchposts widget in your profile, go back a couple of pages to the same post, and click the 'More' link, I get sent to the same page.

And if I go directly to the post, I can click the (Archive) link on the breadcrumbs line for full context.

Inline loading goodness
I'm thinking especially when people make self referencing board posts...

eg. for b3ta.com/board/6537195 the mighty spanner suggests a board link... while I enjoy this style of post, it's a bit rubbish clicking and waiting, it could just load the post it references inline using some AJAXy goodness.

Obviously this is getting into the advanced pedantry zone but it would be nice and (I imagine) quite easy to program.

I wouldn't change a thing
but seeing as you're asking...
-front page archive
-auto pedant
-option to turn off live preview
-toilet cam at b3ta hq
-I don't like this button (by popular demand)
-replace underlined b3ta text with a logo
-filter on image sizes
-enable newsletter comments
-bring back the stats page
-enable url links in board sig
-b3ta webring index

Basically, I want the moon on a stick and then some!

EDIT: And chocolate microscopes!

robtoo edit: you actually have two of those things already... ;)

An option to stop br tags being inserted into your profile

"I don't like this" button
If such a button were to be implemented, to prevent people treating it like a trophy, what about some form of punishment?
ie, banned from starting a new thread for a period of time, no more entries to that weeks qotw/challenge? Or something else, just so there will be very few people who are willing to actually try and become top(/bottom?) of the list.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but haven't got time to read through all of the replies :-)
(, Tue 14 Nov 2006, 8:14, Reply)
new bug/new feature we've always wanted:
On /board, if you click on a non-thread starting post's link, to display it in a new tab/window, then click reply, you get the option of ticking an 'I like this' box.

However, I've just noticed that the clicks don't register, or at least they don't show up when you see what pics you've liked.
(, Tue 14 Nov 2006, 3:46, Reply)
how about
making HTML work in board sigs? so all the vain gits can plug their awful websites 24 hours a day

An option to customise the number of displayed threads on the board
It makes my PDA fall over with 15 threads trying to get in memory. Should be good for dial-uppers as well.

It needs to go down to 1 or 2 threads displayed if you implement it, please.

Love the new ignore button
goodbye dummies! great idea.

I also think that an "I don't like this" button would be a great addition (but would it encourage people to post more crap in the pursuit of topping the chart?)
(, Mon 13 Nov 2006, 16:01, Reply)
i agree
ignore is very useful - although there is only 1 person i can now remain in blissful ignorance of, i love the rest of you! - but i agree, "i hate this".

to quote ianfidel on the best of the QOTW for "i don't get it" back in apr 2005...

"I don't get why you can click "I like this" for a b3ta qotw answer, but there isn't the option of "this is fcuking shite". I would like to click that."
(, Mon 13 Nov 2006, 16:00, Reply)
Ive got one
If your not logged in I get this message when viewing the board:

Warning: in_array(): Wrong datatype for second argument in /var/www/b3ta.com/questions/thread.php on line 170

There you go, click I like this!

"ignore Function"
Some people post great answers and then become more twattish as they try harder and harder to impress.

In cases like this, the "Ignore" button fails to provide a useful function.

More people listen to Chris Moyles because they hate the lardy shite-bag... similarly, and i think i might be speaking for many here..... I'd enjoy hitting a "I don't like this" button on answers... in order to train people into NOT writing shite. having a "rouges" gallery of shite answers would also make things jolly enjoyable.

Morbid Curiosity makes me *not* ignore people... but vindictive crapulence would drive me to hit a "I don't like this" button with child-like joy.

Overhaul the FAQ. Notable mistakes include:
"There are currently two messageboards..."

"We ask board members to judge the [image] challenges for us..."

There's no mention of a lot of the more recent features, like:

- /popular
- swear filter
- nawty step

It's also be nice to update the list of hosting sites - like warren's-anus.co.uk and cr3.

Don't imagine this one is going to be very popular...
...but I've always thought that it was a sad day when the editorial tone of b3ta went all "cuntbuckets" and "holy mother of fuck". Don't really see what it adds to the place and probably puts some people off.
(, Mon 13 Nov 2006, 9:33, Reply)
Somewhere that lists all the
Official b3ta spin-off sites such as Sickipedia, Rob's Blog and Glassco.cx.

I had to resort to Google to find Sickipedia this evening.

Maybe also the best of the unofficial ones too such as the b3ta wiki and 5punk.

can we go back to the old pink line ignore code please?
the new way of ignoring people is just crap, it stops me from reading posts from people I haven't ignored

the old pink line through an ignored user's post was miles better

robtoo edit: I don't believe that replies to ignored posts have ever been displayed on b3ta.

edit: ah right, I was living with a rose-tinted view of the past. But wouldn't the ignore be a lot better if it just pink-lined the person you were ignoring and still let you see other people's replies?
(, Sun 12 Nov 2006, 14:32, Reply)
"who's online"
self explanatory.

images sizes
Can you auto-detect image dimensions? Or prevent people from posting without specifying height and width? I personally find it annoying to have all of the properly coded images suddenly jump 100, 300, 800 pixels down the page because someone with a slow-loading image couldn't be bothered to add a 'height' tag. Yay b3ta.

oh, also...
This has always bugged me... you click on the QOTW page and it shows the Latest posts... then you click on the last page number to go see earlier posts, and it's all the same damn posts! Sometimes for more than one page. I'd rather see a Latest page with only one post than go to a different page and see no new posts at all.
(, Sun 12 Nov 2006, 9:05, Reply)
topicality
In addition to 'I like this', QOTW & compo posts should have a 'This is not relevant' vote. Too many TINR votes and it's off the board!

I favor 'I like this' totals, but they should only show up for a) your own posts and b) posts that you click ILT on, so vote totals don't affect whether other people click but you can see how many others clicked before you.

Also, people who take a QOTW topic like "When did your childhood hero let you down?" and treat it like "Name a famous person you saw!" should be branded on the forehead with 'OT' for Off Topic.
(, Sun 12 Nov 2006, 9:01, Reply)
A couple of things would be great;
1) Adding '/talk' to the 'where' dropdown on glasscocx would be useful
2) More regular icons - the variety springing up for icon choices is very nice :)

feature request: flood control
People should not be able to have more than a certain number of new threads on a board at any one time.

The number could be different for each board though. I just think that /links and occasionally /board get flooded by overenthusiastic people at times. Save your cool pics/links for later, or put them all in one thread.
(, Sun 12 Nov 2006, 3:40, Reply)
ooh! ooh! I just remembered ...
editing doesn't work properly on the links board - you can change the message body but the subject line doesn't get updated

... and the embedded mp3 flash thing still gives an "object expected" error in IE

(but strangely I don't get it when I go straight to a link with an mp3 player like www.b3ta.com/links/40876)

and seeing as we have a new incarnation of Boudicca, why don't you start banning people by IP address?

A very odd bug indeed:
I was searching for the original RIS post using glassco.cx. See glassco.cx/search?q=id%3A33040+newthread&board=main&order=d&start=20, the last result has the RIS image, hosted on piczs.com, but when you go to the actual post - www.b3ta.com/board/4890030, there's a redex from sayagain.co.uk

Certainly made me RIS!

robtoo edit: glassco.cx doesn't use the up-to-date b3ta database, just a copy, and a sometimes-inaccurate one at that.

Paster edit: cheers for explaining that! Maybe glassco could get synchronised once a week or something? However, in this particular case, you'd lose the image.

SEE????
THIS is why we need a "TWAT" feature.. (more commonly known as a "I don't like this" button)
