This is a question Crap Gadgets

We wanted a monkey butler and bought one off eBay. Imagine our surprise when we found it was just an ordinary monkey with rabies. Worse: It had no butler training at all. Tell us about your duff technology purchases.

Thanks to Moonbadger for the suggestion

Since this QOTW is a bit shit, I will intervene with a musing of mine that I've been considering for a while.
Mobile 'phone - allows you to 'phone people.

Camera - allows you to photograph people.

But combining the two - without wishing to be Peter Kay here, but ... who the hell thought that combining the two would be a good idea, and why?

The reason I ask, is because invariably the camera is shit and not worth it. If I want to take a picture of something, I'll use my camera. I can't really see a situation where you'd need a camera on your 'phone.

Bloody stupid idea.

And Apple going on about how their 'phones now have a camera on the front and back! Why? Are you going to take a picture of your ear?! You're an idiot if you fall for that being an advantage!

I'm starting to realise why they said all those things about me.

the camera on the front is for video-calling
you don't always have your camera on you, most people always have their phone, so even though it's lower quality you can still capture unexpected moments. Unfortunately this leads to lots of blurry 'OMG look how drunk I was!' photos.

Now get back in your box granddad, there's a good lad

If I'm a "lad" then that makes you Great grandma, Shirley?

(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:09, closed)
yes, I'm your great grandma shirley
and I'm going to take a photo of you with my iPad

Incontinence Pad?

True that
I went to the NHM yesterday and was able to take a photo of the sign for the Tuojiangosaurus (two-wang-oh-sore-us) and text it to one of my mates with a comment about it DP'ing his mum.

Was worth the free admission alone.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:25, closed)
Dead handy tbh
I love using it to have video chats with my son on Skype when I'm working three days straight in a field in the middle of nowhere with next to no contact with the outside world.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:26, closed)
You obviously wouldn't use the camera for professional photography
But if you want something to take pictures with on nights out etc without lugging around a heavy camera then it is quite handy.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:28, closed)
What she said /\/\/\/\/\/\
It's because you've always got your phone with you. Who can be arsed carrying a camera, too?
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:32, closed)
PNC cameras are tiny now, and much better.

(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:43, closed)
It still means having to carry around two things
instead of one thing, which means more hassle unless you're a female with a handbag
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:48, closed)
I can see where you're coming from on the camera thing...
...but my last few phones have taken fucking FANTASTIC photos, so actually it's really handy not having to have my camera with me all the time.

Sorry, old bean!

EDIT: For instance www.flickr.com/photos/kmlabs/2921849666/ (don't click if you're ascairt of spiders, innit)

There's a shit invention! You're instantly ensuring that burglars will never buy your product :D

without a camera in my phone I wouldn't have captured my dad getting bitten by a Skua, that's why.

Christ, he was lucky.
I know a few chaps from pelagics with fingertips missing from putting rings on the blighters. (brown Skua, in case you're interested).

We feed ‘em all the time, it’s just a little cut at worse. I guess they’re a bit more feisty when they think they're about to get eaten.

Some good birds out there.

Seen a few of them now, but wouldn't mind getting out for a few more trips.

Go take a photo with your camera
somewhere outside, then email/mms it to someone.

Ah, you did bring your laptop, didn't you?
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 11:56, closed)
I don't want to. They can wait until the final edit.

(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 12:12, closed)
Is that when you add the rain?
etc. etc.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 12:32, closed)
Well, I agree with you at least.
Never used the camera on my phone once. Always have my 'real' camera with me.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 12:00, closed)
it's cos you're a proper photographer
for the rest of us who just want a snap of someone/something the camera phone is brilliant. I've always got my phone on me

also the video on my Galaxy S 2 is just lovely
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 12:24, closed)
agree with the galaxy s 2 comment
ace phone
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 13:47, closed)
I concur
It does everything it says on the tin, and then you start finding weird apps like Flashlight or Flightradar. Sky Maps is a great party trick: "who wants to see Uranus?"

And OS Lite is fantastic and much better than Maps for walking.

Garlic bread eh? Eh? Wasn't it better in the olden days?
The garlic bread? It were bigger and more garlicky. And mam let you have a whole baguette to yerself. Never mind you were too busy playing Simon whilst riding yer Chopper to eat the whole garlic bread...
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 15:27, closed)
Because
photography now isnt some technical wizardry achievable by those in the know, now everyone can take their own pictures. Theres a good idea.

Also the camera is not invariably shit, my last two phones have had excellent camera and my latest has HD video. Cant afford a fancy DSLR so getting a camera and a phone on the same contract? Genius!
It seems garlic bread is a good idea
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 16:24, closed)
It's a shit idea to let everyone take their own pictures, for the reasons above.
IE, Facebook omg i wuz sooooooo hammrd lololol!!!!!11!11!

And also, PNCs and cameraphones have shutterlag, which is entertainingly shit.
(, Thu 6 Oct 2011, 11:25, closed)
What? What? What? What?
Phones have cameras on them? Why wasn't I told? Aaahhh, I see, It's a joke. I just checked my phone, and it most certainly doesn't. You cheeky little monkeys.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 16:25, closed)
This makes Peter Kay
sound like a genius.
(, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 19:56, closed)
Also, you can put photos straight onto Facebook.
I love all that crap.
(, Thu 6 Oct 2011, 7:42, closed)
Yes, see - I see it as a reason for starting all-out nuclear war.
