Enormous threadjack: Anyone fancy seeing a homeopathy talk tomorrow in Oxford, UK?
"Dr Steven Cartwright is a molecular biologist who came to homeopathy in 1984,
and since then has been fascinated by the scientific background of the concept.
In 1988 after training, he set up business as a homeopath in Oxford, and his aim
has been to try and contribute to an understanding of how homeopathy might work.
Since 2009 he has been carrying out experiments funded by private donations and
a homeopathic pharmacy.
His talk will focus on some of the misunderstandings surrounding homeopathy,
particularly in relation to the issue of dilution beyond any molecular content
and the interpretation of the clinical evidence. He will discuss recent research
which indicates that homeopathic medicines impart a subtle level of order onto
solutions which may eventually provide an explanation of how homeopathy might
work.
For more about Steven and his work see his Oxford Homeopathy webpage and
particularly the research outline, both linked from his Ox Cafe Sci information
page at www.cafesci.org/oxford/cartwright-0410.html
Doors open 6:30pm, talk starts 7pm."
Cheers, my inbox.

Double blind, randomized trials, mind.
And also, can he explain how this 'ordering' effect on solutions can overcome the rearrangement of the hbonding clathrate networks in water (the most likely solution to preserve some sort of order) which are on the timescale of picoseconds.
Finally, can he explain exactly when he became an idiot?

Biochemistry at Edinburgh. No idea what his topic was, but protein
He's published a paper with one of my lecturers (Andrew Coulson) in 1979, so probably related to this:

to things that don't work in the first place.
To some, that could appear to be progress of a sort.

It's still a 1.8.
It's not about how much it costs, it's about how much damage an inexperienced driver can cause with it.
There's a reason they incentivise new drivers to go for smaller engines.
First time I went into a place to get insurance, I was sat to one side of the desk so I could see the screen as they typed in my 'date of birth'. I got to see it calculate the age, put it in a little box and make it flash bright yellow/red on the operator's screen.

At least you didn't go with Sight & Sound's more impenetrable style of prose - for example:
As for those old movie maestros, it’s the 50th anniversary of Fellini’s self-reflexive cause célèbre La dolce vita, the film that gave us the term ‘paparazzo’. Lee Marshall looks back at this “savagely wry Dance of the Dead, a debased version of Inferno in which Dante’s serious pilgrim is replaced by an ethically compromised chronicler who doesn’t so much observe and pity the damned as get into bed with them.” (Fellini himself worried that he was too entwined in his film’s subject, “like describing a fuck to someone while you’re doing it.”)
ffs!
