This is a link post The solution to stopping any further school shooting sprees.
Not fewer guns, but more guns. In schools! Yay!

Kinda illustrative of the sort of mindset that's got to be overturned in order for any sort of effective gun control system to be introduced.

This is a normal post any sort of effective gun control system...
is doomed before its introduction; the genie is already out of the bottle. if any gun laws required the surrender of now outlawed arms, only the law abiding would comply. the criminal fraternity would not, so many would argue they need to retain their arms to protect themselves against criminals. it's too late unfortunately, although why automatic and semi-automatic weapons were ever legal is beyond my ken. it is also too late for us (UK) to start driving on the right, which is a shit comparison, but it's all i've got.

Make possession of a fire arm a life sentence. Make having bullets in your possession the same.

Trust me, it wouldn't take too long to weed out the scum. You are talking about people who are basicaly cowards to start with. When a few of these sad fat fucks are sitting in San Quentin hoping they don't get raped, it'll drop right off.

You can't 'take' guns.

How did banning automatic weapons and hand guns work out in the UK?

Oh yeah....really fucking well.
(, Sat 15 Dec 2012, 17:32, , Reply)
This is a normal post oh yeah...
i remember well when the UK decided to ban outright handguns post Dunblane, even though their ownership was already extremely strictly regulated. i felt then, as i do now, that a total blanket ban was a knee-jerk over-reaction made by fools who believe that they can legislate against the dark side of human nature. it didn't work out particularly well as guess what, some people don't give a shit if is a handgun is illegal or not, and many handguns continue to be used to wound and kill, so it didn't solve the problem.

as for the banning of automatic weapons, i don't remember that, because it never fucking happened, because they were never legal in the first place.
(, Sat 15 Dec 2012, 17:43, , Reply)
This is a normal post You wouldn't remember automatic weapons being banned
it was in 1937.

Semi-automatics went after Hungerford.

Handguns after Dunblane. As you say 'strictly regulated' but not so strictly that Thomas Hamilton couldn't own several...

How many people were shot and killed by handguns in 2011 in the UK?

I don't have any stats, but they more than likely did, and were replaced by easier to conceal handguns. There are prob a lot of other factors at play here, if the fact that what you state is even true at all.

there a lot of factors at play, which is why effective policing and education work a lot better than blanket bans.

If guns are made illegal, ie hard to get hold of them, you will reduce these problems. Gun crime will still happen, it's inevitable, but making them less available helps to control them against pointless misuses (a 6 year old child finding his parents guns and shooting his brother dead for example)

This is a normal post The Swiss
Once you turn 20 you're conscripted and are given a gun to keep at home.
Most of the population is conscripted into a peoples militia when they become adults.

Up until recently you were also give a sealed box of bullets in case the country was invaded whilst you were away from base.

After 10 years (or 14 for officers) you are deemed to have done your duty but are given the chance to keep the gun downgraded from automatic to semi.

They have a bit of gun crime but not at this level.
Could be the discipline and training from conscription stops people going on sprees or weeds out those that are nutters.

A gun is not an inherently evil machine just as a knife or a car.
The problem is the power that can give someone who has the notion to do evil.

I think there's other countries with U.S level of gun ownership too like Canada but I don't know enough about them.

[edit]
Maybe it's because i'm getting older but I like the swiss model.
They don't pick fights with anyone and people leave them alone because they're all armed to the teeth.
They also have placed explosives on strategic bridges, roads and tunnels in case of invasion.
