Reminds me of county fairs as a kid, but all in Welsh and 4 times as big.

sometimes I understand a Polish speaker with perfect clarity
other times I have no clue of a single word they've said, as if they switched to Russian or Finnish or something. So I've had plenty of meetings where one bloke's nattered on and I have no idea what his problem is.

The English subs don't add much.
I don't really know enough about Russian to know if it's really hard to translate, so comes across incredibly formal and clunky or if that's the way it was to begin with.

Slavic languages are very formal and clunky
You know how French uses "vous" instead of "tu" to appear polite? Polish, Russian etc have a whole other system on top of that to pay appropriate respect.

All I know about the Russian language is from the poor translation of Pathologic. Apparently it's translated near enough straight from Russian to English with no localization or conext, hence everyone in it speaks with very stilted and disconnected dialogue, although it's also quite poetic and, for want of a word, "prosey" formal

What you've described is how the subtitles in Tarkovsky's films are.
As you say it can be poetic and prosey as well. I dunno, it's like the linguistic equivalent of building something nice but not sanding the edges.
By contrast I've read a couple of books by a Ukranian author and they're quite colloquial and easy to follow. I think this is more to do with the individual translator than the differences between the two languages.

I'd been playing fps on pc's for years at that point and I just found it very hard to aim at anything.
I'm quite interested in no mans sky. It'd probably cost the same to get a decent graphics card to play it and some ram as a console. But to be honest I don't think I can face up to the utter boredom involved in researching what constitutes good hardware these days, so I might just get a ps4 to skip it.

I gave up on fps games when Quake came out - partly because my PC could barely run it, but also because I couldn't get the knack of aiming with the mouse.

Well isn't this whatever that markup format that git et al uses is for?
Latex is mostly for academic/scientific documentation with loads of formula.
I'd happily ditch word because it insists on fucking up the layout of documents more than a few pages wrong by making a series of incorrect guesses as to your intentions.

Labour would have a credible leader if the PLP bothered to take their heads out of their collective arse and accept that they're elected to represent the interests of the electorate, not their own narrow self interest.
Obviously, that's never going to happen.

They have enjoyed the well oiled unit of how to do things and then Corbyn's guys turned up and broke the machine but haven't replaced it with an effective model to help govern (skip the the bit that starts "I wanted to make it work and I promise you, I tried to make it work". There is fault on both sides, but the Corbynites are too zealot to even entertain the idea that anything is wrong.

It basically goes like this
Shadow transport person does a big bit of policy work, agrees with leader team on set date for publicity on said policy work. Gets interviews lined up, issues statements, has lead lines ready for any other my that day who was on tv to say about the policy. MP has convo about policy release day before with Corbyn, everything cool. On day of releasing policy work there is a shadow cabinet reshuffle which buries all the work done by said MP.
By well oiled unit I mean press team and MPs worked hand in hand, got their messages out when needed to across tv/newspapers/online. This now seems not to work, thats why all you hear is Corbyn this Corbyn that and no policy stuff. Owen Jones on the weekend (as lefty as you can get) made the same point in a blog post he wrote where he basically says the press message is fucked and they have no strategy to fix it.

Would the reshuffle have happened if the PLP wasn't throwing a months long hissy fit?
I do agree that they are incapable of putting out any sort of coherent message, but I doubt that offering a massive "fuck you" to the membership is going to fix this.

I think some of the membership have their fingers firmly jabbed in their earholes and will not listen to any type of reason. Everything about it points to a personality cult and not to reasoned politics.

I don't think it's personality.
It might be symbolic though.
Most arguments against Corbyn (and by that I mean his policies) seem to be reduced to 'you shouldn't oppose a continual drift rightwards, because you might be stuck with a continual drift rightwards'.
How on earth do you expect things to get better with that sort of view? It's learned helplessness.

Yes, but people who like to go on about 'corbynistas' seem to think people only want him.
This isn't really true. It's just the plp keep offering slimy careerists and refusing to accept that people might want left-wing policies ran by someone who believes in them. A vote for Corbyn to me strikes me as lots of people collectively saying 'nah, try again' until the plp get the fucking point.
They did the same in Scotland and are still blaming the electorate for not voting for them.

Corbyn's a rubbish leader.
The PLP might have more luck ousting him if they stopped trying to replace him with people who up until very recently voted against the exact sort of things they're now proposing.

A rubbish leader he might be, but the wider interest of the party would be better served by the PLP throwing their support behind him,

They've already had "voter oblivion".
A landslide leadership election and an corresponding uptick in membership numbers ought to hint to the PLP that what they're doing isn't going to lead to electoral success.
As a non-member, I'd like to see Her Majesty's Opposition get on with actually opposing the government. If they can't do that, they should resign their seats and let the electorate pick someone who's willing to do the job.

They like to dismiss the uptick in membership as 'not representative of the electorate'.
It's worth noting that this uptick seems to be people who don't usually turn up to vote because they're largely ignored by the electorate for being working class or young. The people that once upon a time Labour ostensibly represented.

Well that's another thing.
When the tories are in power they actually change stuff to be like how they want it.
When new labour were in power, they increased spending and temporarily made things better. When the conservatives got back in they simply picked up where they left off. This has been normalised to the point of people saying labour shouldn't try and change because then you'll have the tories forever.
At that point you've pretty much accepted tory policy and are simply voting on how fast you want it.

I reckon they would absolutely be fine with him if his team could do tab a into slot b. Ed was never the greatest choice of a leader but they did the best with what they had
The policies of Corbyn are like Ed's but with 20% more left. Now an effective PLP can go out and sell a message, if you chose to hobble them to make them fall in line without giving them proper backing, of course they would get fucked off. Some of them want jobs after the next election.
