Did other people not practice reading at angles/upside down/mirror writing as a kid?
It wasn't until people starting turning their heads in the video that I got how he was expecting to "win".
Perhaps I was simply a strange child for taking pleasure in reading books upside down just to see how many people thought I was only pretending to read...

I know that it's another human being and I should be concerned and not laugh, but... well... I become the epitome of schadenfreude in these cases. ;D
In all the clips I've seen of show-off twats performing dangerous manoeuvres, they all come a cropper (and quite rightly so). Does anyone know if someone has discovered a sort of Darwinian theory for self-injuring attention whores such as this fellow?

Ronald Reagan once mentioned
something about if we were facing a hostile force from another planet, how quickly our differences would disappear. He got ridiculed for it, but he was quite right.
More people should realise just how small their 'serious' issues are.

Hear, hear.
Even as a non-smoker who doesn't like to sit amongst dingy, stifling smoke, I'm against this ban. There should be non-smoking bars so that people who don't want to be surrounded by smoke can go and enjoy themselves. However, there should also be smoking bars where people can go and enjoy a nice puff with their pint and so forth. Going from one extreme, where there was smoke everywhere, to the other is no good thing. Everyone should have the choice to go somewhere they enjoy.

I think they did try to do that
There was a weatherspoons somewhere that banned smoking before the ban took place, only problem was that hardly anyone went to it. No bar is going to want to change to non smoking when they know it's going to kill profits.
I just moved over to the US and the state I live in a good law, if the bar sells food then there is no smoking allowed. When the bar stops serving food the smoking is allowed. Best of both worlds.

I think you are missing the point of the ban somewhat
it is more to do with stopping employees from being forced to work in a smoky environment, more than giving non smokers a pleasant place to stay. The ban includes all places of work, not just pubs. Punters can always chose to go somewhere else, staff don't really have that choice.
It's also about discouraging people from taking up smoking in the first place. I dunno about the figures in England/Wales, but in Scotland (where we had the ban a year before the rest of the UK) we have some of the worst numbers for heart disease, cancer and strokes in western Europe. Smoking is a major factor in all of these.
Only time will tell if the ban has long-term health benefits, but in the meantime, smoke-free pubs are just a bonus. Or a curse, depending on how clean the toilets are.
An amusing side story... a few years before the smoking ban, my old employer decided to make the entire company campus non-smoking. The only place smoking was permitted was in a few bus-shelter like smoking areas outside. After the smoking ban, since the shelters were almost entirely enclosed, the were defined as 'indoors' by the smoking band and it was actually illegal to smoke in them.

i was a bartender/manager through our local smokeban process.
99% of our smoking customers and staff griped at first and then admitted they liked the fact that they smoked less as a result. 100% of our nonsmoking customers were elated and came to the bar far more often, thereby increasing business.

If I were to kick up a fuss about not being able to saw asbestos up in a bar, noone would listen. Yet for some reason smokers seem to think I should be forced to get lung cancer, simply because they can't be fucked to go outside.

I spent a week playing in a band in an underground jazz bar
without good ventilation. This was in 05 before the ban. I ended up with a cough. 2 weeks later the doctor said I had developed "condition based asthma" because of some sort of "antigen" overexciting my lungs for a prolonged period.
I went from being a cyclist who never needed any sort of medical help, to needing an inhaler every time I run or cycle in cold weather.
It's limited my training ability more than I imagined it could. On a dry cold night I loose out about about 50 yards on guys I'd normally beat.
So fuck smoking in bars. I dont care if you wanna smoke. but I love not having minging hair and clothes the next day. Sweet.

I was a 20 a day smoker
The the smoking ban came in. and I couldn't be arsed to walk outside all the time so I went down to about 5 a day. Because I wasn't smoking so much it started to taste worse and worse until I just didn't want to smoke anymore. So the smoking ban stopped me smoking and as smoking is smelly, dangerous, dirty, fucking retarded and will kill you I am glad. Its all very well saying "freedom of choice" etc. but if we are honest most of us know that nearly all smokers had their first cigarettes before they were 16 and that it wasn't for pleasure or to relax, it was to either fit in, be rebellious or to look cool. I say ban it outright. Its a fucking disgusting habit and I fucked loved smoking.

actually is it alright if I say "don't ban it"?
I'm in my second week of giving up by the way. I'm down to 3-5 a day from 12-20 ;)
I don't think I should have the right to stop people doing things just because I don't like it. Unless there is direct negative effect to my well being by someone excercising their rights, no judiciary should have the right to intervene.
A ban with never capture the subtlety of any real world event. IMO.

The pleasure of finding things out.
Richards Fenman's interview on horizon in 1981. An absolute pleasure to watch if you have 50 or so minutes to spare. He reflects on his life as a child, his father, his passion for science, his involvement in the development of the nuclear bomb and what it means to be a scientist.
Quality isn't the greatest but it sorts itself out after a few minutes. Enjoy!

I know, Ive searched for ages to try and find another copy.
Its a beautiful speech. Science can seem so cold and distant, especialy for young people, but when you hear stuff like this its so wonderful. Same reason I like Brian Cox, he's so insatiably exited by what he does its infectious!
I love hearing about science, cant do it for toffy, crap at maths etc, though I tried my hardest in my GCSEs and got a B I suppose. But all the Feynman, Dawkins, Sagan stuff people post on here I really love and make me want to sneak into Science lectures here at uni ;), its just a shame theres not more of it on the beeb (funnily enough im writing an essay on on Public Service broadcasting at the moment) Anyhoo, heres the speech, I'll keep looking for the actual footage, because it really works best hearing it in Feynmans own voice.
"A poet once said "The whole universe is in a glass of wine." We will probably never know in what sense he meant that, for poets do not write to be understood. But it is true that if we look at a glass closely enough we see the entire universe. There are the things of physics: the twisting liquid which evaporates depending on the wind and weather, the reflections in the glass, and our imaginations adds the atoms. The glass is a distillation of the Earth's rocks, and in its composition we see the secret of the universe's age, and the evolution of the stars. What strange array of chemicals are there in the wine? How did they come to be? There are the ferments, the enzymes, the substrates, and the products. There in wine is found the great generalization: all life is fermentation. Nobody can discover the chemistry of wine without discovering, as did Louis Pasteur, the cause of much disease. How vivid is the claret, pressing its existence into the consciousness that watches it! If our small minds, for some convenience, divide this glass of wine, this universe, into parts — physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology, and so on — remember that Nature does not know it! So let us put it all back together, not forgetting ultimately what it is for. Let it give us one more final pleasure: drink it and forget it all!" - Richard Feynman

"I wish to complain in the strongest POSSIBLE manner"
Yes, I get a feeling that can only be described as 'English' when I set out on my little crusades for justice :-D

Took about half an hour
Like he said, far too long. Maybe the navigation was crap as finding some of the items was just random guess work, but meh. Few red herrings too.

If you're in the UK
it's all up on 4od/YouTube anyhow (as with most of Channel 4's stuff).
Good to bear in mind for stuff from the BBC though!

It's OK, but I'm just how clever it is compared to Lynx's advertising efforts over here
especially their current spotify placement that basically goes "girls are shallow and dense, the only way to entertain them is with a deodorant that changes smells".

Ha,
I was actualy considering before whether an advert for Impulse or something would get away with advertising to lasses along the lines of "your worthless, unatractive and uninterseting to men if you dont buy this product" Then a shockwaves advert came on spotify with some old sounding Yorkshire bloke essentialy saying "bih 'eck lass, your hairs shite" and realised yeah some companies are actually that stupid.
