The shirt was a stereotypically bad fashion call by someone unused to spending time thinking about his appearance. I don't believe for one second it was worn to "make him interesting to children", that's a ridiculous thing to claim.
There is a major problem getting people in to science at school. There will always be those that naturally fall into it, but there will also be those who are capable who are either uninspired or unaware that it's possible. Twitter users tend to be younger, so the anthropomorphisation was there to engage them. If a few are inspired enough to dig deeper, then that's well worth ruffling the feathers of some sniffy, serious fools.
