OH HEY YOU, WE GONE DUN A FILM AIN'T WE.
It's about Britney Spears and we tackle some pretty heavy subjects about her life, like her involvement with the illuminati, the Bush administration and the fact she has been dead for the last seven years.
Obviously it's a VERY SERIOUS SUBJECT and not supposed to be funny in ANY WAY WHATSOEVER.

I struggle to get my head around the terminal illness and unbearable suffering criteria in most (all?) assisted dying laws
I really don't see why "I've had enough and would like it done properly" isn't legally recognised as a good enough reason. Indeed, to insist that people be suffering unbearably seems inhumane to me - that increases the suffering in the world for no good reason, and is a bit like saying that you can't leave the casino until you've lost your house. Plus, if you are suffering unbearably, the risk has to increase that you're not thinking straight, and so not competent to make the request in a sufficiently clear-headed way anyway.

That has nothing to do with assistance.
He was believed to be unconscious and with not long to live; organs aren't available for long (and beating-heart donors are ideal); it makes sense to have the discussion as soon as possible. There's no suggestion of finishing him off.
The strongest complaint seems to be that the discussion was held within earshot.
In other words, it's a bit of a non-story.

I personally don't think the NHS can be trusted with it 'as is'
The Care Quality Commission has produced a damning report on how the NHS is ran currently without the allowance of assisted suicide.
There's Dignitas, is someone wants to die that bad, the option is there. Give it 50 years or so ,and there a root and branch reform of Health services then ,maybe its worth trialing. As it stands, I would trust the NHS to run a bath never mind a licensed murder program.

The decision process isn't great ATM
If you had assisted suicide, the case for terminating borderline cases would increase 'as you'd be doing them as favour' (so the thought process goes)Goal posts moved, lines blurred, this guy would probably be parted out for spares by now.

what are you on about
Assisted suicide is done on the patients decision not the doctors, it wouldn't be suicide if someone else made the decision.
It would also require sign off from impartial doctors, counsellors and possibly family members.

The fact that lots of people think something doesn't make it true.
Though you're probably right that it's going to be a while before we see AD in the UK.

Who has told you that assisted dying does not take the wishes of the patient in to account?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dignitas_(assisted_dying_organisation)
"they provide assisted suicide for people provided that they are of sound judgment and submit to an in-depth medical report prepared by a psychiatrist that establishes the patient's condition, as required by Swiss courts."
"The person who wishes to die meets several Dignitas personnel, in addition to an independent doctor, for a private consultation. The independent doctor assesses the evidence provided by the patient and is met on two separate occasions, with a time gap between each of the consultations.[2] Legally admissible proof that the person wishes to die is also created, i.e. a signed affidavit, countersigned by independent witnesses. In cases where a person is physically unable to sign a document, a short video film of the person is made in which they are asked to confirm their identity, that they wish to die, and that their decision is made of their own free will, without any form of coercion. This evidence of informed consent remains private and is preserved only for use in any possible legal dispute.[citation needed]
Finally, a few minutes before the lethal overdose is provided, the person is once again reminded that taking the overdose will surely kill them. Additionally, they are asked several times whether they want to proceed, or take some time to consider the matter further. This gives the person the opportunity to stop the process. However, if at this point the person states that they are determined to proceed, a lethal overdose is provided and ingested"
The patient takes the drug themselves, it's assisted suicide, not murder.
I assume from your lack of reference you haven't found anywhere that says Doctors can kill who they want

So your argument against legalising assisting someone to die
revolves around the fact that forcing someone to die is illegal, but happens anyway?
Oh, boy.

It just underlines the point that some Doctors and medical staff may also operate under an 'agenda'
Thus embellishing the argument 'its too much, too soon'

No it doesn't.
Well, it does in the trivial sense that Shipman's agenda was to bump off grannies for his own gain; but that tells us nothing at all about assisted dying. But it says nothing in any more fundamental sense; to make the argumentum ad Shipmanum ignores the fact that Harold shipman was not engaged in
assisted dying, and — vitally importantly — that since the illegality of neither AD nor murder actually stopped him, it’s unlikely that current legislation would suffice to stop others killing people against their will either.

Im trying to say.....
If you give someone 'carte blanche' to use assisted suicide ,there always will be abuse. Till the NHS is tightened up, its impractical to implement, not only for this reason, but for the general malaise that haunts the NHS. Not to say it will directly affect terminal patients, rather that its akin to giving a moronic teen the keys to a Maserati after his 100'th crash.

you've ignored the facts every single time
there is no 'carte blanche' for one doctor to make a decision.
You would have to convince the patient, their family, a psychiatrist and other doctors before you killed an assisted death patient.

as a society we prefer to ignore death
Which I think has lead to a bizarre in hospitals where dying patients who can't eat or drink are put on an IV drip and left to starve, rather than just put them out of their misery.
which is why if I get to that age I'd choose Dignitas over the chance of dying on a hospital ward

All very "Catch 22"
I reckon the problem is that they are trying to apply the same criteria that we use for having family pets put down.
In those cases we make the decision based on how we view the animal's suffering.
The difference is that the animal can't tell us how it feels. so the "I have just had enough" scenario can't come up with the animals.
We can only base our decision on obvious physical suffering.
Humans are different and can, generally, tell us how they feel and to ignore this would be ridiculous.

because God botherers of all breeds would prefer you to die horribly and in pain than with dignity
because it's the "Lord's will"
We won't be able to have a rational policy on assisted suicide until they are removed from the equation.
