The point is probably something to do with money being a mask for talent.

But don't you find it wrong that to prove your ability you ultimately have to have money these days?
I don't wish these students any harm or failure (I think most of us are exaggerating our annoyance somewhat, as per b3ta etiquette), but it does annoy me that they are basically going to stand above the shoulders of other equally talented students out there because they have more money.
If I was the person running this course, I would put a cap on budget and make it the same across the board. Not only is that fair, it prompts them to think within realistic financial boundaries. Which would probably be better for their development as creative professionals, as I'm sure anyone who works in film and TV will attest.

No, I find it wrong that people ask for money to cover up their lack of ability or ideas.
I think the attitude 'we cant possibly make anything decent, we don't have any budget' will just lead to even less imaginative film makers than we already have.

I agree there
But then that's the discipline isn't it. It wouldn't be a course worth taking if everybody could do it.
I mean degrees used to be regarded as 'disciplines' in the traditional learning sense. It used to be about training the mind, not fucking around for three years with money and camera equipment. Arts and Humanities degrees used to be about reading books, writing essays and engaging in critical thinking. That's probably why you won't find vocational creative writing, film or media courses at any of the more traditional universities like Oxford, Cambridge, UCL or Durham etc.

to be fair catering is actually really important
if they're taking a load of cast and crew out in to the hills to work for 16 hours a day in the cold and the rain they will need solid hot meals all round. it does actually cost a fair bit to lay that on.

These students want to make a film which costs money. They don't have the money so they look for investors and people who feel that they would like to contribute to the fund, they do so, the students make the film, the investors are happy seeing their money used for something nice, everyone wins.
Even Steven Spielberg has to find funding for his films. And he doesn't take it out of the cash machine.

This sort of thing is clearly very popular in Russia
but are there any stats for the number of deaths resulting from kids in Russia playing on very high structures? I've never actually heard of any deaths, but surely it must have happened by now on the assumption that there are hundreds of these videos out there, and presumably there are many more people doing it without recording their antics.
I suppose alternatively I could put forward the new theory that Russians just bounce...

There have been quite a few, i can't quote the exact figures though.
There was a bit of an outcry by parents who lived near some of the more popular structures seen in some of the videos as there were a lot of people watching the vids then deciding to climb them only to fall off.

I dunno
I ride a motorbike. I could get a car instead, but bikes are just so much more fun. Part of that fun is the danger element - pushing yourself to take a corner that little bit quicker each time (I'd like to point out, that I do not ride like a twat, I don't weave in and out of traffic, and I do obey the speed limits other than on the motorway, where you'd be causing a traffic jam if you travelled at 70!). I've also done a lot of white water canoeing. Again, I don't need to do this. It's dangerous, but that feeling as you're about to drop down a fall into some rapids is great!
Admittedly those things I've mentioned are probably far more controlled risks, but then again, I've learned the skills I need to undertake these activities, and I guess those kids in Russia have done similar.
It's still mental, and makes me feel slightly nauseous just watching them though!

Biker here too
and mountain biker. What is it about two wheels that just feels so graceful and gives such a feeling of freedom? Still less scary than that, even on the 1100cc Kwak in the rain!

I miss my mountain biking days :(
I used to live up in Scotland where the riding is always amazing. Since I've moved down to Dorset it just hasn't been the same. The hills are all too short and gentle. I now have a road bike instead.
But yes, two wheels are fantastic! That feeling of just flowing smoothly round corners is lovely!

Nah
cars push you to the side as they go round corners. On a bike, all the forces are working together so you just get pushed down into the saddle a little more.
With panniers mounted, I have ample room for shopping too :)

Piers Morgan seizes upon issue to try to save his dying career in the US and ressurect his reputation in the UK
Who says people don't profit from tragedy? In this episode, Piers and his guests are mad about people wholike guns. They have a good laugh about luring one of these people under false pretenses and then shooting him in the head. Hillarity ensues.
Please ignore the hypocrisy because Piers is making his way back into your hearts, and saving his CNN gig at the same time!

Oh, you really are an insufferable rectum.
Either that, or you genuinely can't tell the difference between reality and non-reality. Yesterday you were banging on about how guns should be allowed because... er... Hollywood. Today, you're taking a piece of transparent hyperbole as an earnest suggestion.
You're right up there with those who demanded that Erik Loomis be prosecuted because he said he wanted to see Wayne La Pierre's head on a stick after Newtown (see this, for example, in reference to this).

There are some things which really shouldn't be available on the NHS. IVF springs to mind. The NHS should be there for when you're ill.
( , Thu 10 Jan 2013, 12:28, Share, Reply)
I'm guessing you've never been in the position of needing IVF.
I think giving it to anyone over, say, 50 or maybe even 40, is debatable, but a sweeping statement like yours shows no experience or empathy.

You're guessing correctly. And lacking in experience (specific experience, I assume you mean, rather than general)doesn't disqualify me from having a valid view, any more than having that specific experience would.
If I were canvassing opinion on whether people felt that IVF should be available on the NHS, I wouldn't ask them to qualify for an opinion by revealing whether or not they've had IVF.

No, it's not an illness any more than baldness is. Obviously it is very distressing for people who want children and can't have them, but I can't accept that it's the role of the National Health Service to spend thousands tryign to help them conceive. Not when we have people with cancer being told that the best treatments are too expensive.

I'm not a medical professional, so I accept that my definitions may be off the mark, but that's a semantic issue. My point is that the NHS is spread far too thinly and has strayed far too much from its original goals.
Not being able to have children must be awful, but only a society that has solved all its real problems should consider funding IVF.
The NHS has a limited budget and creaks under the weight of demands on it. Can you look at the issue dispassionately and tell me what area of NHS funding you think should suffer to facilitate IVF? What's less important in your opnion?
( , Thu 10 Jan 2013, 13:06, Share, Reply)
You can get cosmetic surgery on the NHS if it's deemed to be distressing and effecting your mental health.
Also you can get a sex change for the same reasons.

you've said that nhs treatment should only be available to those with an illness.
I'm trying to get to the bottom of what you mean by that.
So far baldness and infertility = not illness
Cancer = illness
How about baldness in women? Illness?

I'm genuinely interested in trying to understand your stance.
Could you respond to feckler's valid (in my eyes) questioning:

homeopathy?
But why should any area of NHS funding have to suffer? I'd much rather see a few thousand women get IVF treatment than a replacement for trident.

most people can afford a wig. I'm not an expert on the subject, my view is a layman's. There are always difficult decisions to make in what to treat and what not to treat. My layman's view is that IVF should be very, very, very far down the list in terms of priority.
( , Thu 10 Jan 2013, 14:01, Share, Reply)
according to the WHO, 'healthy' is "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".
And illness is the state of any of these components being absent.
I therefore withdraw my use of 'illness', but retain my general point.

It's reported based on spend per head in the article which is why the comment threw me.

It means that I didn't read the site at the particular time that this link was previously posted. Which, by the way, was a different URL, so the preview didn't inform me that it was previously posted.
If there was a way of searching without having to read back 5 or 6 previous pages of links, then my inappropriate behaviour could have been avoided.
Also, could somebody please point me in the direction of the part of the T&C where it says that you must read each and every single post, and follow every link, in order to prevent this from happening?
What's with the sanctimoniousness?

The fail vids used to be fairly tame but they've gotten more grim to the point I can't watch them now.
To post a video of someones death for entertainment shows a lack of empathy I can't get my head around.

Fucking hell, that used to be quite funny, it's like a half hour long fail vid now, it's gone pretty hardcore, couldn't watch it.

Posting a snuff vid for anything, let alone other peoples amusement depresses me.

*Wades in to internet argument with a lollipop*
Doesnt depress me, watching someone or something die doesnt change or affect the outcome, I wont cry about it, I wont get upset about it...thats not to belittle or deride those that do...its a link, you can choose to watch it or not.
The most distressing link I saw was the Squirrel getting brained by a trap...while it sat there in its dazed, permanently brain damaged state (I presume) I couldnt help but think that squirrels arent that annoying creatures are they..
Not a direct reply to you in particular, but I wouldnt call it a snuff video, a catastrophic video with an outcome that could have been avoided definitely.

v good post. except that squirrels are only not annoying if you don't live in an area that is absolutely heaving with them.
