Looking for a conspiracy?
I think he's popular here because:
1/ Before the show he used to do all kinds of clever internet things that tickled /links' fancy &
2/ It's a bit different from the bog-standard UK tv comedy.
...and 3/ not forgetting that comedy is ridiculously subjective.

He is popular pretty much for what Tab Hunter says
But also, here is the story of Citizen Khan:
I actually am one of the few that found Citizen Khan funny, but that show was an idea in a commissioner's head to have a comedy to appeal to a Pakistani and broader audience.
Pretty much the only Pakistani comedic character on the BBC had been Adil Ray in Bellamy's People - so the clever comedy commissioner called him, Anil Gupta and Richard Pinto and said, come up with a sitcom pilot for that character you used to do, and given it is the only bit of comedy with a diverse element we can assure you it will get finance.
And the rest, as they say, is coke and pats on the backs for the comedy bosses over at the old Beeb.
-------------
This is why people like Limmy. He fucks about with a comedy format. That is refreshing.
I am pretty sure people used to stare blankly at Monty Python, and it took me fucking ages to get what Harry Hill was trying to do with his Fruit Corner/Fancies. I have no fucking clue what Mrs Brown's Boys is all about. And though I get why Outnumbered should be good, and Him and Her and Hepburn and so on.. I just don't have the energy to watch them.
I say all that to prove that I am a humourless twat too.

I think the Python anaolgy's spot on. I used to find them funny, but can't bear re-watching it. Very much of its time. Like Limmy probably.
Also Limmy, as you say, fucks around with the format- he's not always out for the belly laughs. This I can enjoy again & again, but A dozen Tina Turners in a contest to see who's "The Best" is a funny concept rather than LOL slapstick.

Piers twatty morgan.
The American petition to deport Morgan for his unconstitutional rhetoric following the Sandy Hook school shooting has now achieved almost 70,000 signatures, well beyond the 25,000 required to mandate a White House response.
However, a counter-petition which features on the change.org website calls on the UK government to prevent Morgan from returning to the UK.
I think we should all sign it and stop the cnut coming back.

Surprised they only need 25,000 to be taken seriously
We need at least 100,000 before us plebs actually get some sort of say.
Which is probably a good thing given the irrationalility of the average person. Love our plutocracy! Keep smiling, oiks!

It is essentially to register strength of public opinion in both cases.
For the US, it only demands a response from the White House, here it only demands a non-binding debate and then only from the petitions selected by the Backbench Business Committee.
They are useful in campaigning, but they aren't designed to be a form of participatory democracy really.

I think its a bit odd that this isn't mentioned in some of the mainstream media
BBC article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20826525) mentions he "was visiting the UK for study and work, to try to make a better life for his wife and children back home", but that is not quite "he is due to be deported". My guess is mainstream media was aware of his deportation, but wouldn't really want to mention that in the same report as he is going for a Christmas number 1, it's not very inspiring for any aspiring musicians to think this non UK citizen can get all this promotion..... I'm not being racist BTW, just like to point out how crap media is.

yes and no...
the fact that they are such a cash cow is precisely why so many bogus universities and colleges have been established. such bogus institutions have no real academic function or purpose, other than to take huge tuition fees in return for a student visa from people who would not be otherwise be granted visas, and they really don't care if they turn up for any tuition, if there is any adequate or significant tuition anyway, which often there isn't. if i remember rightly, that is exactly why his college closed, i.e. it was exposed as a sham.

That hasn't been true for a few years now.
What overseas students have to do to continually prove attendance at real universities is ridiculous & humiliating. London Metropolitan recently lost its licence for foreign students as it didn't keep tight enough reign on them. Though I haven't followed the story recently- they may have got it back...

The university I work at requires students to present their IDs a lot more than that.
There is a genuine sense of fear that the uni will lose its licence. And the woman I work with who deals with the foreign students knows them all by name & yet needs to see passports & student ID regularly....

ok but...
the only bit of what you say i really take issue with is 'a few years', they have started, in a typically lame, limp and slow and bureaucratic way, to crack down on it in the last 18 months or so. and yes they did relent with london met, to my mind incorrectly. the problem with the london met, and many other similar shitty institutions is that they grant the visa, get some fees, and the 'students' just disappear. they take on students who aren't up to studying at a tertiary level in a second language cynically for the cash, so obviously the drop out rate is fucking huge, even for those who genuinely come to study. that's the real shame.

I thought they'd really been tough with dodgy colleges.
But, knowing how this country operates, it wouldn't surprise me if that has been translated to "we will be tougher..."
The dodgy college/students disappearing used to be a massive problem- I thought it'd been stopped- I wouldn't be surprised if I were wrong.

But, knowing how this country operates, it wouldn't surprise me if that has been translated to "we will be tougher..."

All sponsors now need HTS and that means needing Educational Oversight.
Basically this costs so much that it bankrupted most of the dodgy places. We had ours done by QAA, fucking cowboys.

i believe...
that it remains a massive problem, but that is probably because i am a small-minded little englander whose only source of information is the daily heil, hence all my ignorant ill-informed beligerent rants. VOTE UKIP.

I work in a college that deals heavily with overseas students.
The Border Agency are cracking down on the regulations for overseas students, called Tier 4 students. Lots of smaller colleges are closing down, he would have a 60 day notice to find somewhere else to study before being deported.
What surprises me is that this guy was working, as if you're an overseas student at a private college you don't get a visa that allows working hours. Only Tier 4 students at Universities are allowed to work.

selling fish for a quid in a crappy market - not really a hotbed of visa checking. none of these 'students' were exactly on the books with their employers.

hate to tell you this, but no it's not.
lumping every online news/investigative journalism source in together because they share a delivery method is the same as lumping Private Eye in with the Daily Star because they both use paper.

I assumed you meant "mainstream media" to imply "old media" - tv, newspapers etc
Implying that the Internet is a haven of truth and justice for the enlightened whereas the "sheep" watch telly etc etc. Can you ever forgive me? Can you??

Way to go!
You made your missus sad at Christmas. Sorry but I never did understand the psychology behind cruel pranks like that. A friend of mine put a brick in an XBox box and gave it to his ten year old son for Christmas. He was pissing himself laughing as he showed me the video of his son opening the box to find the brick. I didn't laugh and he accused me of ha ving no sense of humour.
