delusional unpaid job ad #437
Idle time-killing saw me just stumble across this ad, which left me speechless in more ways than I can begin to explain.
note: I am not actually looking for a job, an if I were it wouldn't be as a magazine editor. I just read anything I can find on the internet in order to avoid doing any actual work.

there's loads of these daydreamers on Gumtree, few as 'away with the fairies' as this one though.
Own thread hijack:
on the bus last night, heard a drunk guy blathering on to some poor cow he'd just sat next too. He provided this gem, when lamenting his choice of girlfriend:
"I should have known better. She already had three kids by four different blokes."

Eh?
"It would also be advantageous if you are someone with proclivities for personal amelioration and edification."

WTF is wrong with Salford?
There have been more shootings in this tiny area of Manchester than in any other geographically similar sized area in the uk (in 2013). I've been there a couple of times and it doesn't even appear like that bad a shithole (lots of parts of London and certainly Sheffield are way worse).

I think referring to Salford as a "tiny area of Manchester" is a good starting point to earning yourself a bullet in the buttock ;o)
It's got, as anywhere, good bits and bad bits. There are a lot of old-school "families" in the area, and they seem to be going through a bit of a spate at the moment of taking what one might call a ballistic approach to problem solving.

Yeah, it's the old school families who are pissed off with their areas becoming 'gentrified'.
It does have some nice areas but it's the mindset of some of the people who have been there for years that has to change more than anything, doesn't matter how much money is pumped into the place.

Heard about this yesterday
Was hoping the footage was a bit longer, but it's still good. Weird to think they're so elusive. Watched a documentary years ago about them which featured a guy in Australia or New Zealand who spent his days panning water off the coast to see if he could pick up a baby giant squid (they're tiny) in the hope of raising it in captivity. That would be... interesting.

I think part of their ethos recognises that very positive, and unexpected, things can come from people persuing their own projects.
If people are to some extent working in self directed ways then they will invest a lot of themselves into it and which in turn brings out the best in them at times.
It also seems like a bloomin' decent way to treat people, especially when compared to the battery hen layout of some studios.

Any publicity is good publicity as far as that paper is concerned.
Edit: Supposedly on the article about that FPS guy they posted a bunch of pictures that weren't even him to accompany the article, add to that the spelling mistakes in every article and it sums them up pretty well, sloppy at best.

A friend of mine worked for the Daily Mail for several months on the diary column
Said that they were, for the most part, genuinely clever, interesting and nice people, who saw themselves as having a really shitty (but well-remunerated) job.
One can talk about ethics and having the balls and the principles to just walk out...I'd like to think I would.

Why? Only the broke students tend to go to student union here, even then it's only about 20p cheaper than most places.
All the other students go to expensive bars in the city centre in fancy dress and are really fucking annoying, i get the impression most of the people who go to the union here do so so they aren't associated with these pricks staggering down Oxford Road dressed as golfers and whatnot.

Was at this gig.
Good memories. Only gig taping I've attended; cameras were very unobtrusive, as I recall. He was very nervous, he was a bit green as a stand-up at the time, and bricking it about fucking up his first DVD. Came out nice in the edit.

Been in the Twitter wars today, made me think of this;
NSFW
It's a shame JohnnyUtah doesn't have a YouTube account as far as I know of I would have put the proper one up. you can Watch it on newgrounds though.
Possibly NSFW for the unexpectedly bloody ending.

Excellent skewering of the Big Bang Theory
Warning: WORDS! LOTS OF WORDS!
I've never been a fan of the Big Bang Theory. Lots of people have told me I should like it, but I've never been able to put into words exactly why I don't. This does.
And then some.

I'd also hate the IT Crowd. Except I don't. I love that and I think the difference between the two is that the IT Crowd is never spiteful towards its characters.
YMMV and all that. Like I said, lots of my friends like it.
They are wrong though.

because it's just NOT FUNNY, and it's SHIT. TBBT is reasonably funny and I know so many people like that (my son and his mates) and it never feels spiteful.

The IT Crowd tries jokes that just aren't funny and always makes me feel it was written by 6th formers (the more likeable ones though, not the Stewart Lee type) and the Big Bang Theory just doesn't contain any humour at all.

Skim read it to be fair
but what I picked up was he was giving it even more credit for clever writing than it actually deserves. A friend absolutely raves about TBBT, but I think it's really poor. There is some decent American comedy around, but this isn't one of them, the humor (sic) isn't clever, or subtle, it's ill-fashioned and crudely constructed.
And I just cannot see the point of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

When it first started,
my flatmate came home and said, 'Have you seen that Mrs Brown's Boys? Someone at work says that it's a bit like Father Ted'.
I looked at him incredulously and told him that it was supposed to be shite and the fact that it's on BBC1 should be warning enough, but we started watching that evening's episode...5 minutes later the channel was changed...

Well I have started to realize that 'nerds/geeks' for want of a better word(s)
want to be outsiders.
The premise that we are positioned outside of the characters that we identify with Penny is perfectly valid in the BBT. The main characters represent a tiny tiny percentage of the population at the very cutting edge of knowledge. They are not geeks in the traditional sense, they are geniuses with a liking for things that geeks identify with.
It's tiring to listen to endless geeks going on endlessly about how this isn't right and that japanese cartoon from 1962 was the basis for blah blah and you need to read the real true origin of blah blah and how this isn't cannon and that isn't cannon...
wankers.

the thing I find about the BBT
Take away the laugh track and its just bleak and depressing but unlike something dark I find funny, like League of Gentlemen there is never any thought or point behind it, just despairing situations set to laughter. After watching 10 mins I left feeling a bit sick, I think thats why.

All this longwinded exposition does is make the writer seem very insecure, perhaps the show pointing out issues with their own life that they would rather not face?
